Thousands of Whole Cantaloupes Sold at Walmart, More Recalled Due to Salmonella

The recall impacts more than a dozen states.

If you’re a cantaloupe fan, you might want to check your stash of the tasty and healthy fruit. According to an announcement from the Food and Drug Administration, Eagle Produce is voluntarily recalling 6,456 cases of whole cantaloupe due to Salmonella concerns. The recall was initiated after an FDA-conducted test was completed on cantaloupe in a distribution center, and showed troubling results.

The cantaloupes subject to the recall are sold under the Kandy brand. For additional information about the recalled items, see below:

The recalled fruits were distributed between September 5 and September 16 in California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington D.C. They were sold in various retail supermarkets, including hundreds of Walmart locations across the aforementioned states.

Per the FDA, no other products or lot code dates are affected by this recall. The agency has also noted that, as of September 27, 2023, there have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled products. Still, shoppers who have purchased the recalled cantaloupe should not consume it. Instead, the potentially contaminated product should be disposed of immediately.

Salmonella can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. In the rare instances where Salmonella gets into the bloodstream, it can lead to a more grave illness, such as an arterial infection, endocarditis, and arthritis.
