Three gold medals for Erne athletics stars at School Championships

A number of Fermanagh’s athletics stars competed in the Ulster Schools’ Championships at the Mary Peter’s Track this past week.

There were three gold medals for Erne runners while four silver medals and two bronzes were also collected across the five age groups of events.

Oliver Polak grabbed gold in the Intermediate Boys’ Discus as his first throw in round one reached 39.42m.

He then broke the 40m line in round three with a distance of 40.32m. The Devenish College athlete also went on to grab a silver medal in the Intermediate Boys’ Shot Putt to cap off an impressive championship display.

Jamie McDonnell, of St. Michael’s, raced his way to gold and had 10 seconds to spare over second place in the Senior Boys’ 2000m Steeplechase with a time of 6:38.38. Enniskillen Royale Grammar School’s Harry McKenzie took gold in the Intermediate Boys’ 3000m.

There was also success for his sister Annabel who sealed a silver medal in the Intermediate Girls’ 1500m Steeplechase, she finished just behind Letterkenny star Anna Russell of Loreto.

A silver medal ensued for Frank Buchanan, of St. Michael’s, as he finished behind Caolan McFadden in the Senior Boys’ 800m.

On the opening day of the championship, St. Michaels’ Jack Donnelly finished just ahead of Evan Tosh, of Belfast Royal Academy to take second.

In addition, there were bronze medals for St Michael's pair Charlie Reihill and Deivs Tarvids.

Rehill finished third in the Senior Boys’ 5000m and Tarvids landed third best in the Intermediate Boys’ Triple Jump.
