Celtic Fan View: Hoops should entertain offers for trio

As Celtic’s preparations for the second half of the season continue in the soaring heat of Dubai, the hierarchy have been active in the transfer market. Marvin Compper and Lewis Morgan have been signed, while a couple have made their exits from Parkhead. With two weeks of the transfer window remaining, there’s sure to be more in-comings and outgoings.

A few ‘first-teamers’ could also find themselves moving on this month. Here, we analyse which players Celtic should consider cashing in on if the price is right.

Moussa Dembele

He’s not hit the heights of last season due to injury and squad rotation, but there’s no doubting Moussa Dembele’s potential. It’s the reason why a number of Premier League clubs are still keeping a close eye on him. His influence and talent has only been felt sporadically this term, so a good offer might be too good for the Hoops to turn down.

The talk of Dembele moving to the Premier League for £30 million has calmed down, but the figures being bandied around are still extremely healthy. An offer of £12m to £18m has been mentioned a few times which, if accepted, would still be great business by the Celts. Thierry Henry has already advised the young Frenchman to make the move down south.

While Dembele has become a fans’ favourite in Glasgow, he is destined for bigger and better things, as Brendan Rodgers has also admitted. A transfer in January could, therefore, suit all parties as Dembele gets his move to a lower Premier League outfit, while the Hoops get a load of cash to spend on a replacement.

Stuart Armstrong

Like a few players in the Bhoys’ squad, Stuart Armstrong has struggled to replicate his immense form of last term. The former Dundee United man played with tremendous energy in the middle of the park during the treble-winning campaign, but has been off the pace in the last few months. Even his goals tally is considerably lower this time around, with just five strikes compared to 17 in 2016-17.

There’s also a feeling that Armstrong doesn’t want to be at the club in the long term. Despite signing a new contract in Autumn, he only penned a two-year extension after protracted negotiations. It seems Armstrong has his heart set on a move to the Premier League, with Southampton rumoured to be considering splashing £10m on him. Given his performances this season, Celtic should grab a fee in that region for the Scotland international.

Jozo Simunovic

It wasn’t too long ago that Jozo Simunovic was being tipped to be the leader in the Celtic backline. Now it seems Rodgers has lost faith in the centre-back. The 23-year-old has been dropped for the younger Kristoffer Ajer over the last month and the signing of Compper has probably confirmed he’ll be heading for the exit.

Simunovic has experienced some difficult matches in the last few months, especially in the Champions League. But the 4-0 defeat to Hearts exposed his flaws and Rodgers’ patience has run out. Lazio are said to be weighing up an £8m offer, which would be a fine deal for the champions.
