Three things we learned from the 3-2 win over Chelsea

Three things we learned from the 3-2 win over Chelsea

Real Madrid 3-2 Chelsea. Here are three things we learned from the game…

Karim Benzema may not be ready for the start of the season

Having missed out on France’s squad for the Euros it wasn’t the best of summers for our #9. We were all desperate for him to come back stronger as soon as possible and show France what they missed out on.

Sadly, this has not been the case. Benzema once again did not play a single minute with Zinedine Zidane stating before the game that it was Benzema’s hip issues which would rule him out. Spanish paper AS have reported that Benzema may also miss the Bayern Munich game and that this has affected Zidane’s plan to try out an Alvaro Morata-Benzema strike partnership.

With Benzema’s last game being the Champions League final in May, even if he was to get some minutes in the Bayern game he is unlikely to be fully fit for the Super Cup. It’s looking like Morata will get his chance to shine come August the 9th, should he still be at the club.

Jese Rodriguez is potentially on his way out

Jese started our first pre-season game against Paris Saint-Germain though played no part in today’s win over Chelsea. Unai Emery did confirm that PSG are interested in signing Jese and Cadena SER reported that any deal will likely include a buy-back clause.

Jese is 23 years old and is undoubtedly a talented player but Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Gareth Bale are guaranteed starters thereby limiting his opportunities. Let’s not forget that he is also competing with Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio for a place in the team. A move, including a buy-back clause, would be the perfect move for both Jese and the club. He will be playing the regular football he deserves and if he does fulfil his talent, we can bring him back to the club.

Marcelo is the best attacking full-back in the world

Although he is often criticised for his defensive contribution, nobody can question his attacking one. Marcelo is constantly an option on the left-hand side of the pitch and his technical ability for a left-back is unmatched by any other player in his position.

He was lucky to score his first of the game after a deflection saw his right-footed shot from outside the box beat Asmir Begovic. There was nothing lucky about his second after a one-two saw him cooly finish to put us 2-0 up. That’s now three goals in two games for our Brazilian. He even managed to get an assist this game, supplying Mariano for his 30-yard stunner.
