Konta defeats Sakkari 6-4, 6-1

Johanna Konta ensured there will be a British woman in the second week of Wimbledon for the first time in four years with a comfortable win over the Greek world No 101 Maria Sakkari.

The British No 1 broke her opponent in the very first game and never looked back, outclassing her opponent for a win that took just 1hr 16mins.

Konta said after the win: "I think I competed really well. It wasn't easy. It was a little bit windy out there, so I think it made it difficult for both of us to play necessarily our best level.

"I definitely believe in myself, the fact that I can keep improving, I can keep getting better, yes."

Her next assignment will be considerably tougher though, as she takes on France's 21st seed Caroline Garcia, who is fresh from a run to the French Open quarter-final.

Rafa races through

Nadal defeats Khachanov 6-1, 6-4, 7-6

Rafael Nadal maintained his formidable recent form with a straight-sets win over the Russian rising star Karen Khachanov.

Nadal has not dropped a set at grand-slam level since the Australian Open final, and he made it 29 sets won in a row with his victory over Khachanov.

Khachanov, the 21-year-old No 30 seed is being hailed as a future grand slam winner, and produced an impressive performance on his Centre Court debut.

He was powerless though to stop the Nadal juggernaut. The Spaniard hit 41 winners and made just 19 errors in what was a masterclass of powerful baseline tennis. He was also able to hold his nerve when the going got tough, and fended off a set point in the third set with a brilliant forehand drop shot.

Next up for Nadal is an awkward looking fourth-round match against the 16th seed and Queen's semi-finalist Gilles Muller.

Heartbreak for Heather

Azarenka defeats Watson 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Heather Watson's Wimbledon run ended on Friday after she suffered a third-round defeat to the former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka.

The British No 2 put up a fantastic fight and showed once again that she is a far better player than her lowly ranking of No 102 suggests, but ultimately came up agonisingly short.

Watson started the stronger of the two players and took the first set 6-3 after 34 minutes of nerveless tennis. Azarenka though began to show why she is a two-time grand slam champion and took the second 6-1 after eking out a number of tight games.

The final set went with serve until the seventh game when Azarenka grabbed what looked like a crucial break for 4-3. The players then exchanged breaks in the next two games before Azarenka served out the match to secure a place in the fourth round.

Tribute of the day

American Jack Sock, the world No 18, paid an on-court homage to his compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who suffered an horrendous injury on Thursday afternoon. Sock scrawled her name on his shoes before his mixed doubles match alongside Madison Keys.

Spectator of the day

Legendary All Black Dan Carter joined fellow rugby players Dylan Hartley, Chris Robshaw, Brian O’Driscoll and Jason Leonard in a Royal Box crammed with sporting royalty, but there was one star shining brightest and that was David Beckham, who was enjoying the tennis with his mum Sandra.

Detective of the day

Kim Clijsters, commentating for the BBC, appears to have taken on a second job: rooting out illegal coaching from the players’ boxes. Not for the first time this week, she used her commentary position to flag up some underhand communications. This time the guilty party was Victoria Azarenka, who received some forehand instructions from her team.

Number of the day
