Tom Youngs has taken indefinite leave from Leicester Tigers to care for his wife, Tiffany, who is battling an illness.
Leicester announced the news on Monday lunchtime, explaining that the hooker had returned to his family home in Norfolk ahead of the first round of Premiership fixtures last month.
Youngs is yet to feature in Tigers’ table-topping start to the campaign, which comprises five consecutive wins over Exeter Chiefs, Gloucester, Saracens, London Irish and Worcester Warriors so far.
Leicester, who brought in Tom Cowan-Dickie from Championship club Cornish Pirates to cover Youngs’ position, confirmed that he was under no pressure to return.
“Youngs has returned to his family home in Norfolk to care for his wife Tiffany, who is battling an illness,” the statement read.

“Tigers are offering support in all forms to Tom and the Youngs family during this period.
“The period of leave will remain indefinite for Tom, as long as the Tigers forward feels necessary to remain in Norfolk.
“At this time, the Youngs family have requested privacy and there will be no further comment from Tom, the Youngs family or Leicester Tigers on this matter.”
Tiffany Youngs, was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in 2014, shortly after giving birth to daughter, Maisie. Three years later, she was given between a month and a year to live.
In May 2017, Ben Youngs pulled out of the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand to support Tom and the rest of the family.
The following year, after a course of alternative treatments and diet changes, Tiffany’s cancer went into remission and she was diagnosed as free from the disease. Last year, she set up a business selling a range of wellness products.
It is understood Ben Youngs will still be named as one of the scrum-halves in England’s squad to face Tonga, Australia and South Africa next month.
