Tottenham defenders square up and 5 things Ange Postecoglou must watch at Euros and Copa America

Tottenham Hotspur fans and their head coach still have plenty to keep an eye on at Euro 2024 and the Copa America as they reach the business end of the tournaments.

The European Championships round of 16 fixtures are about to begin, with those matches kicking off on Saturday, and the Copa America in the USA is halfway through its second round of group stage matches but then advances quickly as it does not have a last 16.

Even though Ange Postecoglou has now ended his well-received three-game stint as a pundit for ITV there is still plenty of Tottenham involvement in both competitions in the weeks ahead as well as potential new recruits to be seen.

Here are five things the Spurs boss and the club's supporters should look out for at the competitions:

Spurs stars square up

Two Tottenham centre-backs could go head to head on Tuesday at 5pm as Romania take on the Netherlands. Radu Dragusin has starred for Romania during their historic run to the knockout stages as they topped the tightest group in the tournament in which every team in Group E ended on four points with goal difference deciding things.

The 22-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for his country and impressed throughout, while the Netherlands have struggled - albeit also with one win, one draw and one defeat - and only qualified for the knockout stages in third place in Group D.

Micky van de Ven, 23, has had to make do with just 28 minutes across two appearances as the Dutch have shipped four goals in their three matches.

Ronald Koeman could decided to hand the speedster his first competitive start for his country and if he does then the two Spurs defenders will come face to face on July 2.

When Tottenham players will return

We know that one of Dragusin or Van de Ven will end their Euros next week, which means that with three weeks off often offered to players after a tournament, that exiting defender could be back in time to head on the tour to Japan and South Korea next month, with the squad expected to fly out around July 22 to start their trip to Tokyo.

Guglielmo Vicario's Italy are up against Switzerland on Saturday and then Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is back in action against Germany later that day. So either could be back at Hotspur Way sooner rather than later. Hojbjerg has been linked with a move away from Tottenham and Vicario's lack of actual action for Italy could mean he decides he needs less of a rest, albeit having trained hard through the competition in case he's needed.

At the Copa America, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso's Argentina are already through to the quarter-finals, which start from next Friday (July 5) onwards. Rodrigo Bentancur and Uruguay were set to kick off their second group stage game against Bolivia in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

Shop window displays

With Argentina already qualified for the knockout stages, Lo Celso, who has come on for about 20 minutes or so from the bench in their first two matches, could be handed a longer chance to impress. The 28-year-old might get a start in the final group game against Peru this Sunday as Lionel Scaloni could look to ensure his regular starters are rested and his other players are sharp for the quarter-finals if required.

More game time means more eyes on Lo Celso, who is expected to leave Tottenham this summer after half a decade at the club, and will only increase the interest in his services.

Hojbjerg has also impressed at the Euros and with that game against in-form hosts Germany, he might have one final chance to put himself in the shop window before the bids start arriving. Both players have a year left on their contracts at Spurs.

Keep an eye on Jonathan David

Jonathan David is among the shortlist of names Spurs are looking at for a potential striker signing this summer. Other clubs are also looking at the Canadian, and Tottenham have others on their list, but you can get a good look yourself at the 24-year-old, who scored with a fine finish to win the game against Peru on Tuesday.

He will be up next against Chile at 1am UK time in the early hours of Sunday morning if you fancy staying up to watch a player who has scored 26 goals a season in his past two campaigns for Lille and could be available for around £25million this summer.

Linked players

It's not just David as other players Tottenham are keeping an eye on are still in action at the Euros. Eberechi Eze is a midfielder Spurs like but has had precious little time to impress under Gareth Southgate since the tournament in Germany began. He could get another chance in Sunday's match against Slovakia and Spurs fans, and Palace fans of course, will be watching closely.

Others players who have been linked with Tottenham in recent weeks by the media with varying degrees of accuracy such as Conor Gallagher, Ivan Toney, Riccardo Calafiori and Santiago Gimenez will also be in action across the two competitions so make sure you catch them before they get their summer break.
