Tottenham set to trigger clause in Erik Lamela deal to secure Argentine's future

Tottenham will secure the future of Erik Lamela after an impressive comeback from injury this season.

Lamela's contract was due to expire at the end of next season but Tottenham now have an option for the 2019-20 season, which they will trigger. That means Lamela will now not go into next season, the first at the new White Hart Lane, in the last year of his contract, and facing questions about his future.

After more than one year out with a persistent hip injury, Lamela has returned to the Tottenham first-team in recent months, and has made 10 starts for Mauricio Pochettino's side as well as 18 more substitute appearances.

He has impressed, earning a start ahead of Heung-Min Son for Saturday's 3-1 home defeat to Premier League champions Manchester City. Lamela is now in the frame to start against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

signed Lamela for £27million in the summer of 2013, and the Argentinean midfielder signed a four-year deal with two option years. Tottenham exercised those options, extending his contract for this season and the following one.

There has been serious interest from Italy, Spain, Portugal and France in signing Lamela, especially before his 2016 hip injury, but he has been at Tottenham for five years now.
