Tottenham vs Aston Villa LIVE!
Tottenham’s hopes of regaining their place in the Premier League's top four were scuppered as they suffered a demoralising 2-0 home defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Antonio Conte's lacklustre side were devoid of inspiration throughout the contest and were punished after the break by goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz. Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, playing his first game since losing the World Cup final, was at fault for Buendia's 50th-minute opener. And when Luiz added a second in the 73rd minute, home fans began streaming towards the exits.
Chants against Spurs chairman Daniel Levy rang out and it could have got worse as Villa sauntered to only a third win in their last 22 Premier League clashes with the Londoners. Tottenham were booed off at the final whistle as defeat left them in fifth place with 30 points from 17 matches, two points behind Manchester United who have a game in hand and 13 behind local rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Aston Villa take a 2-0 win at Tottenham with boos greeting the final whistle for the hosts!
15:55 , Marc Mayo
90+6 mins: Villa look to cap a perfect away day with a late third, Digne swinging in a corner that pings over the bar via Watkins.
15:52 , Marc Mayo
90+3 mins: Kamara pops up in a great position in the Tottenham box but, like a good defensive midfielder, has no inclination to shoot whatsoever and a good opening goes.
Chambers booked for timewasting as Villa concede a foul.

90 mins: SEVEN minutes added on.
There is time for a late rally, were Spurs capable...

88 mins: Chambers flies a long-range shot high and not too handsome as he bids to bang in a stunner against his old London rivals.
Conte makes his final two changes and receives some ironic cheers as Spence comes on, along with Skipp, for Perisic and Hojbjerg.

86 mins: Romero escapes a potential second booking for sending Coutinho tumbling as the ball had gone out of play. John Brooks escapes a tricky decision on a technicality.
15:44 , Marc Mayo
84 mins: If anything, 3-0 looks more likely than 2-1 if another goal is to go in.
No shots on target in the second half for Spurs with none of their key players turning up today.
15:39 , Marc Mayo
80 mins: Another soaring two-goal comeback feels really unlikely for Tottenham today.
Sarr and Royal enter the fray, for Bissouma and Doherty.
It’ll be a triple change by Emery; Bednarek, Ings and Chambers introduced for Buendia, Konsa and the injured Luiz.

Antonio Conte insisted there would be no World Cup hangover, but Lloris’ error led to Villa’s first goal, and Kane’s mistake the second.
Kane was robbed in his own half, Luiz traded passes with McGinn then slotted home to double Villa’s lead.

71 mins: Tottenham are looking second best in their latest bid to level the scores.
Villa have hardly been magic themselves though and look vulnerable to over confidence in attack.

68 mins: Well if that doesn’t sum it up...
Neat play in the middle third leads to a Son knockdown for Kane, whose snapshot half volley goes all wrong - high and over the bar.

Finally Spurs’ premeditated plan of positioning Perisic on the last shoulder pays off – only for the ex-Inter Milan man to fire over. A big chance missed as Spurs go hunting a leveller.
Tottenham have conceded the opening goal in 7 successive @premierleague games for the first time since Nov 2010.

59 mins: Fourth booking of the day for Spurs as Kamara draws Bissouma’s foul and wins a free-kick in a good spot.
That’s a one-game ban for Bissouma’s fifth Premier League yellow card of the season.
CHANCE TOTTENHAM!
15:17 , Marc Mayo
57 mins: Villa completely fail to deal with a ball in by Bissouma and, three defenders later, it lands at Perisic’s feet. On the stretch, he knocks a shot over the bar...
15:15 , Marc Mayo
56 mins: Mings booked for arriving late on Kane.

Make that 10 games in a row in all competitions for Spurs to fall behind.
The hosts would have hoped reaching half-time on level terms could break that chain. Instead a Hugo Lloris error gifted Villa first blood through Buendia.
GGGOOOOAAAALLLL!!! Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa | Buendia

49 mins: How about that?!
A drive from range is spilled badly by Lloris and Watkins spins the ball back into the danger area for Buendia to slam home!

A smattering of boos to greet half-time here, in a mostly measured response to the stalemate.
Ashley Young’s goalline clearance denied Kane a breakthrough, but Spurs will be frustrated with a lacklustre showing so far.

42 mins: A lively end to the half for Spurs, Bissouma and Gil key to working a chance through the middle.
All Son has to do is roll Kane in for a one-on-one... but its overhit and the goalkeeper gathers.
CHANCE TOTTENHAM!

37 mins: Another booking! John Brooks flashes the yellow card at Davies for landing studs on Young in challenging for a loose ball.
That is all three Tottenham centre-backs on a caution.
“You’re not fit to referee,” half-heartedly chanted off the home end.
“We forgot that you were here,” reply the Villa fans.
14:36 , Marc Mayo
34 mins: All nice and safe from Tottenham as they creep forward, their advance stunted by Buendia’s smart tackle on Gil by the touchline.
14:33 , Marc Mayo
31 mins: Lenglet booked now for hauling down his marker off the ball.
Nick Purewal at Tottenham Stadium
14:32 , Marc Mayo
Half an hour in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and no shots at all by the hosts, let alone anything on target. Ollie Watkins has had the sole attempt for either side so far, and he dragged that wide.
Tentative in the extreme as a start to 2023 thus far.
14:31 , Marc Mayo
28 mins: Romero booked for a scissor-slide tackle on Watkins that was just a bit too dangerous for the referee’s liking, even if he did get a sliver of the ball.
Villa give it away and this scruffy contest continues.
Spurs improving, though, as Son wins a corner.

14:28 , Marc Mayo
26 mins: Next up is Bissouma, down clutching his head after clattering into Watkins at a bouncing ball. No foul given, rightly, with the Spurs man simply second best.
Both him and Young will continue.
Young has been receiving treatment after a challenge with Davies, but he looks okay to continue for now.
⚪ 0-0 🟣 [25'] #TOTAVL— Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) January 1, 2023
14:25 , Marc Mayo
24 mins: A problem for Young after Davies followed through on him in competing for the ball, no malice but a sore one.
14:24 , Marc Mayo
22 mins: Now it’s Spurs turn to sit on the ball yet a killer ball is still lacking, Son almost getting on the end of a poor Young clearance before Konsa gets it away.
14:20 , Marc Mayo
18 mins: Nothing from Son or Kane in the opening quarter of this match.
The Korean even gets caught on the halfway line as Bailey nicks in before Son jumps back with a tackle.
And he throws his facemask away in disgust! It looks like he’ll play on without it.
14:16 , Marc Mayo
15 mins: Spurs fans want a penalty as Digne tangles with Doherty in the box.
John Brooks waves it away...

Matt Doherty might not have been the first name on the mind when it came to sparking this stadium to life. But the full-back nutmegged Tyrone Mings in the area to enliven the home support.
Bouba makes an excellent challenge to deflect Doherty's effort away for a corner, which is cleared. 👏

CHANCE TOTTENHAM!

13 mins: There’s some spark!
Doherty nutmegs Mings with a fine piece of play that is shut down by Kamara in the Villa box as he looked to pick out Son.
The corner is hooked away.
14:13 , Marc Mayo
11 mins: Call it a cliche, but we do have a little bit of a New Year’s Day atmosphere in north London.
On the pitch, a few challenges have arrived a split-second late with a lack of quality overall.
14:11 , Marc Mayo
9 mins: More threat from Villa as Watkins races down the left wing before being shown wide by Lenglet and slashing a shot wide of the near post.
A warning sign for Spurs...
14:08 , Marc Mayo
6 mins: Perisic thinks he’s broken into the box but a trademark piece of professional foul winning from Young sees Villa win a free-kick.
A bit soft from referee John Brooks, all told.
14:06 , Marc Mayo
4 mins: A little scrappy from Tottenham at the start, the hosts not yet able to string a number of passes together.
14:03 , Marc Mayo
2 mins: Spurs will be desperate not to concede the first goal for the tenth game in a row and Aston Villa get an early foot on the ball.
Bissouma fouls Luiz 35 yards from goal.

Antonio Conte has reminded Cristian Romero that he will be expected to play like a World Cup winner now that he is one.
“He must know very well that a more difficult period will now start for him,” said Conte.
“Because this expectation is going to become high for him, and for this reason he has to work much harder and he must not lose the desire to improve himself.”

“It was our plan, he needs to rest and he is on the bench. We have Robin Olsen and we trust in our players, we’ll have to use everybody when needed.

Antonio Conte previews the game on Sky Sports
13:39 , Marc Mayo
“It’s very important to have Hugo [Lloris] and Cuti [Romero] in the starting XI.
“When you start the game you try to score and don’t concede, in the last few games we have conceded then we were good and came back. We’ll try to pay more attention and be good defensively.”
Warm-ups underway!

One man not out on the pitch is Richarlison, who has been out on the sideline nonetheless.
Less than half an hour to go on the countdown to kick-off.
Spurs out to end long run
13:30 , Marc Mayo
Nine games in a row. That is how many games Tottenham have conceded the first goal - something which Antonio Conte has described as “strange”.
He said in the week: “For sure it’s strange, it’s a strange situation, to concede the first goal, to go down for nine games in a row, is very strange.
“We spoke with the players, and maybe when you go to have only to play many games in a row, and you don’t have the possibility to work on the tactical aspect, the defensive aspect, I think that you can lose something.
“But for sure it’s our intention to try to avoid going one-nil, two-nil down and to start the game in the best possible way.”
