Tottenham 6-2 Leicester LIVE! Son hat-trick - Premier League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates

Tottenham vs Leicester - LIVE!

Heung-min Son came off the bench to net a sensational hat-trick and end his goal drought in style as Tottenham beat Leicester 6-2 in north London.

The Foxes, who remain bottom and without a win, took the lead through Youri Tielemans’ penalty, but Spurs swiftly turned things around as Harry Kane and Eric Dier scored headers from corners. James Maddison levelled things up just before the break, but Tottenham moved back in front two minutes into the second-half as Rodrigo Bentancur got off the mark for the club.

From then on, it was the Son show. He scored three goals in the space of 13 minutes, the first two absolutely wonderful finishes, to put an end to his slow start to the season and move Tottenham level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Spurs bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment against Sporting Lisbon and ensured they go into the international break on a high.

Match analysis

19:56 , Matt Verri

A stunning 13 minutes have changed the conversation around Tottenham superstar Heung-min Son.

Ahead of the match, it was about whether Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison could take his spot alongside the talismanic striker Harry Kane.

Initially, Antonio Conte’s decision to leave out the South Korea international seemed sensible. Son had only got one assist and hadn’t scored in his eight games at the beginning of the season, leading to some rare criticism around north London for his lack of impact.

Meanwhile, Richarlison had produced some impressive displays since his £60million move from Everton, registering two goals and two assists in one fewer match. Equally, Kulusevski had the same number of goal involvements (one goal and three) in his nine matches.

It shows an embarrassment of riches that Conte now has at his disposal after being backed again in the transfer market by chairman Daniel Levy this summer.

Tottenham player ratings

19:42 , Matt Verri

Heung-min Son 9

Son reminded Conte of his worth with a stunning dribble and right footed strike in the 73rd minute.

It drew the biggest cheer of the night as he terrified both James Justin and Wout Faes before curling it past Ward. The South Korean superstar then struck with his left foot, curling a shot from 25 yards to remind the world that he is one of the best at what he does.

FT: Tottenham 6-2 Leicester

19:22 , Matt Verri

Well that was incredible.

Son with a hat-trick off the bench, barely raised a smile though. Any questions well and truly answered.

Spurs move level with City at the top.

19:18 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Conte celebrated those Son goals wildly on the touchline, he knows that could spark his forward right back into form going forward.

Won’t want the international break now! Four minutes added on.

GOAL! Tottenham 6-2 Leicester | Heung-min Son 86'

19:15 , Matt Verri

IT’S A HAT-TRICK!

Incredible. Son has three off the bench. What an incredible cameo it’s been.

19:14 , Matt Verri

Son with a hat-trick.... NO!

Offside flag is up. Seconds earlier he was denied by Ward, this time he does find the back of the net but the flag is up.

It’s very, very tight. VAR will check.

GOAL! Tottenham 5-2 Leicester | Heung-min Son 84'

19:12 , Matt Verri

Sensational!

So, so good and Son is silencing any critics. It’s another sublime finish from distance, finding the top corner with his left foot this time as he curls it past Ward.

19:07 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Almost two for Bentancur!

Kane does superbly to turn into space, cuts it back. Ball bobbles around, falls for Bentancur and his shot is saved by Ward. Emerson can’t quite get to the rebound in time.

Spurs straight back on the attack - Romero somehow misses! Looked a certain goal after a wonderful pass from Son. All good though, offside flag is up. Romero can show his face.

19:06 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Chance for Ndidi, drags it wide. Leicester look set to suffer more frustration.

Against Brighton they took the lead early, fell 2-1 down and then equalised to make it 2-2 before eventually losing 5-2.

It’s on the cards again...

19:04 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Perisic earned a yellow card for coming back on to celebrate with Son - doesn’t look particularly bothered.

Leicester bring on Vardy and Iheanacho for the final 15 minutes or so.

GOAL! Tottenham 4-2 Leicester | Heung-min Son 73'

19:01 , Matt Verri

He’s back on the scoresheet!

Brilliant finish from Son and that could well settle it. He drives forward, goes for goal from 20 yards out and curls it into the top corner. Sensational.

18:59 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Bissouma on for Kulusevski, as Conte looks to see this out.

Applause around the stadium in the 70th minute, in memory of the Queen’s 70 year reign.

18:56 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Again Tottenham sit off and allow Maddison a huge amount of space.

The cross comes in, Barnes wins the header but he can’t direct it. High and wide and Lloris has nothing to worry about.

18:53 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Great challenge from Romero, as Barnes was threatening to run through on goal.

Maddison then whips a cross in from deep, deflected behind for a corner. Leicester still right in this match.

18:50 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Faes absolutely crunches Kulusevski, nothing wrong with that challenge despite the heavy impact.

Kulusevski down holding his ribs, landed awkwardly as he was thrown into the air. He’s back up now though.

18:48 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Son and Romero on for Spurs, replacing Richarlison and Sanchez. Decent options to have off the bench!

Leicester again so close to scoring - or not, it was handball. Maddison fires a cross into the six-yard box, Daka throws himself at it and actually punches the ball over the bar.

Yellow card for that.

18:46 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Superb save!

Leicester still carrying a real threat. Maddison lobs a cross into the box, Daka gets up well to win the header and it looks destined for the bottom corner.

Lloris down quickly to palm it away.

18:44 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Clever from Maddison, as Dewsbury-Hall plays a loose pass to him. Waits for Bentancur to pressure him and buys a cheap free-kick.

Too far out even for him to go for goal, you’d think. It is and it’s a pretty tame cross. Spurs easily clear.

18:42 , Matt Verri

55 mins: First change of the match from Conte.

Perisic off, Emerson on in his place. That will allow Sessegnon to move back out to the left wing.

Disaster for Leicester

18:41 , Matt Verri

18:39 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Tottenham have been so much better since the break, as you suspected they would be.

They win a corner, which is a big problem for Leicester judging by what we’ve seen. Perisic with the delivery, Dier flicks it on again but it’s straight at Ward this time.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:38 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte will be delighted with the reaction after half-time after Rodrigo Bentancur dispossessed Wilfried Ndidi in midfield to dribble and shoot to make it 3-2.

Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma had all been warming up at half-time in perhaps a message to his team that he is not happy.

The visitors have dominated possession and had far more shots throughout that first half with Lloris very active, but set-pieces had kept them in the game.

Spurs had to improve or they face losing to a side who haven’t won a league game all season.

18:36 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Evans with a really poor pass out from the back, Spurs are nearly in again.

This time Ndidi cleans Hojbjerg out to stop the counter, earns a yellow card for his troubles.

GOAL! Tottenham 3-2 Leicester | Rodrigo Bentancur 47'

18:35 , Matt Verri

Tottenham take the lead!

An absolute gift. Ndidi caught on the ball, Bentancur wins it and he’s clean through.

Just passes it into the bottom corner for his first Tottenham goal.

Back underway!

18:33 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in north London.

Stats in Leicester’s favour

18:29 , Matt Verri

Leicester had 14 shots in that first half, five of which were on target. Just six shots from Tottenham.

60% of possession too for the visitors, who produced probably their best half of the season so far.

We’ve seen it regularly this season though - Spurs poor in the first 45 minutes and then improved after the break. Leicester have to keep their levels up.

Kane’s 18th league goal against Leicester

18:25 , Matt Verri

Superb equaliser from Maddison...

18:20 , Matt Verri

HT: Tottenham 2-2 Leicester

18:18 , Matt Verri

Massive chance for Leicester just before the break, worked to Maddison and he’s completely free in the box. Hammered straight at Lloris.

And that’s half-time - it’s been a great watch. Leicester really impressive, Spurs yet again this season with a largely passive display.

18:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on and it’s Leicester back on the attack.

Maddison drills a cross in towards Daka, Dier reads it and heads the ball out of play.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

18:14 , Matt Verri

Leicester are constantly threatening Hugo Lloris’s goal despite having yet to register a win in the Premier League this season.

The fallible nature of both teams has created a great spectacle in north London.

18:14 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Spurs nearly back in front immediately!

Guess what? It comes from a set-piece again. Leicester not helping themselves at all.

Perisic clips a lovely ball into the box, Sanchez with the header and Ward does brilliantly to tip it onto the bar.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-2 Leicester | James Maddison 41'

18:11 , Matt Verri

It’s been coming!

Tottenham have sat back since taking the lead and it’s proved costly.

Ball fired out to Castagne on the right, Sessegnon not strong enough. Castagne cuts it back to Maddison, it’s a stunning finish on the half volley to just guide it into the far corner.

18:08 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Spurs can’t get out, Hojbjerg robbed by Maddison and Leicester can keep the pressure on.

Ndidi then releases all of that, smashing a shot from 30 yards about 30 miles over the bar.

18:06 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Leicester very much on top now.

Justin burns past Perisic, plays a low ball in and the shot is shanked across the face of goal. Castagne does the hard work to keep the ball in play, but then dribbles it out.

18:04 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Ball bobbles away back to Faes, Hojbjerg urges his side to press up the pitch.

Leicester quickly back in the Spurs half though, Castagne swings a decent cross into the box. Falls for Dewsbury-Hall on the edge of the box, he hammers an effort over the bar.

18:00 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Sessegnon to the byline on the left, drills a low cross and it’s turned behind. Spurs corner.

This time Leicester do clear it, poor ball doesn’t clear Dewsbury-Hall at the near post. Ironic cheers from the fans.

17:59 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Big, big chance for Leicester.

Lenglet and Dier both push up to intercept a pass, leaving space for Daka and he’s played through on goal.

Doesn’t back himself with Sanchez catching up, goes for goal way too early and it’s a tame effort at Lloris.

17:57 , Matt Verri

27 mins: It’s in again!

But after an age the whistle goes for a foul. Swung it right on top of the goalkeeper, Sanchez goes up to challenge Ward for it.

Not particularly impressive goalkeeping but he’s got away with it. Leicester survive but these corners are a massive issue for them.

17:56 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Perisic gives the ball away, Leicester can break through Barnes.

He plays it to Tielemans, wide to Maddison, back to Tielemans, his goes for the back-heel... chance goes. Had about three chances to shoot there and didn’t do so.

Spurs break themselves and they win a corner. Trouble for Leicester.

17:54 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Leicester again just so poor at defending set-pieces. Great ball in from Perisic but the visitors look like conceding from every corner.

They have it all to do once again.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-1 Leicester | Eric Dier 21'

17:51 , Matt Verri

Really good from Richarlison, chases after a loose ball to keep it in play and then wins a corner by knocking it off Castagne.

Perisic will take this. Whipped into the near post, Dier flicks a brilliant header into the far corner!

Spurs have turned it around in less than 20 minutes.

17:48 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Despite their own vulnerabilities, Leicester will be feeling pretty happy with this start.

Look capable of causing Spurs problems, as Maddison tries his luck from distance. Blocked before it can trouble Lloris.

17:46 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Leicester seeing plenty of the ball at the back, Spurs with no interest in pressing high.

Visitors work it forward, Maddison opts not to shoot and plays it wide to Tielemans. Cross too close to Lloris, he comes off his line to claim.

17:43 , Matt Verri

13 mins: The space on offer for Spurs is crazy.

Worked out to Perisic on the right wing, he cuts inside onto his left foot and fires an effort at goal. It’s well blocked, despite the hopeful appeals for handball.

17:41 , Matt Verri

11 mins: That’s Kane’s 18th Premier League goal against Leicester, in his 15th appearance.

Camera zooms in on Leicester’s set-piece coach. Safe to say he’s got a bit of work to do.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Leicester | Harry Kane 8'

17:39 , Matt Verri

Didn’t last long!

Kane does it again Leicester yet again. Corner taken short, Kulusevski cuts inside and whips a brilliant cross in.

The Tottenham striker is there at the back post, too strong for Castagne and heads it past Ward.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Leicester | Youri Tielemans 6'

17:36 , Matt Verri

This time he scores!

Goes the same way, lifts it a bit higher though and Lloris can’t get there.

After a chaotic couple of minutes, Leicester have an early lead.

SAVED!

17:35 , Matt Verri

Youri Tielemans has his penalty saved!

Lloris guesses correctly, diving to his right and he keeps it out brilliantly.

Hang on though, VAR check. Was he off his line? YES. It will be taken again!

PENALTY LEICESTER

17:34 , Matt Verri

Well Sanchez has had an absolutely dreadful start.

First he takes a wild hack at a loose pass, when he had all the time in the world to just control it.

Then Leicester break forward, Justin on the left wing driving into the box and Sanchez dives in. Looks like the foul happened right on the line.

17:33 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Leicester playing out from the back, under real pressure from Tottenham.

They lose it in a poor position, Kane can drive at the Foxes defence but Evans just about halts his progress. Visitors sloppy in possession in the early stages.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:31 , Matt Verri

Heung-min Son will have few complaints about being dropped to the bench for Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski who are in better form than him.

Just one assist and no goals in his first eight games of the season lag behind both Richarlison (two goals and two assists in seven games) and Kulusevski (one goal and two assists).

KICK-OFF

17:30 , Matt Verri

We are underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tributes paid

17:28 , Matt Verri

Ledley King and Emile Heskey walk out with floral wreaths. Minute’s silence has been observed, with the national anthem then sung.

Ready to get up and running in north London.

Teams are out

17:25 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers lead their sides out onto the pitch.

The two teams, and those in the stands, will pay their respects to the Queen ahead of kick-off. This is the first Premier League match in London since her death.

Rodgers’ pre-match thoughts

17:23 , Matt Verri

“We’ve started games well this season, it’s about how you respond when you’ve maybe had a setback - that’s something we’ve spoken about and looked at.

“But what’s most important is you can’t go into your shell, you have to play offensive football, which means pressing but also having the courage to go and create, and I think we can do that against any team.”

Warm-ups done!

17:20 , Matt Verri

Conte insists Son being dropped is just rotation

17:16 , Matt Verri

“The reason is he’s playing every time. We need to start rotation, because if we think all the games are played by the same players, it’s not good.

“It wasn’t good in the past for Tottenham, we won’t repeat the same mistakes of the past.”

Tough test for Faes

17:13 , Matt Verri

Wout Faes was Leicester’s only outfield signing of what was a painful transfer window for the club.

He makes his debut this afternoon, as Wilfried Ndidi moves back into midfield. Serious test for Faes first up... keeping Kane quiet is the assignment for him today!

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:06 , Matt Verri

So far today...

16:59 , Matt Verri

Manchester City beat Wolves 3-0 earlier today, with Erling Haaland on the scoresheet for a change.

That win took them top of the table for now, Spurs can go level on points with them though should they beat Leicester this evening.

Arsenal have the chance to go above both City and Tottenham when they face Brentford tomorrow.

Dier told to emulate Bonucci

16:51 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte has told Eric Dier to set his sights on emulating the career of Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci.

Dier is in a rich vein of form at the moment and he has been rewarded by being recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.

Conte has praised the Tottenham defender for making it back into the Three Lions squad, but he doesn’t want Dier to rest on his laurels. Instead, Conte is encouraging the 28-year-old to aim to have a glittering career like Italy great Bonucci.

“If you compare him with some of these important central defenders, don’t forget Eric started his career as a midfielder,” said Conte.

“In modern football it means you can use him as a central defender but also as a No4. With the ball, Bonucci can be a really good example for him.”

Conte a busy man...

Kulusevski in for Son

16:39 , Matt Verri

So Conte does indeed drop Son to the bench, as Kulusevski comes in alongside Richarlison and Kane.

Romero and Emerson also on the bench, with Perisic starting at wing-back out on the right. Sessegnon on the opposite flank.

For Leicester, Daka gets the nod up front over Vardy. Faes partners Evans at the back, allowing Ndidi to line-up in midfield.

Leicester team news

16:34 , Matt Verri

Leicester XI: Ward, Castagne, Faes, Evans, Justin, Ndidi, Maddison, Tielemans, Dewsbury-Hall, Barnes, Daka.

16:24 , Matt Verri

Team news from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium coming up in the next five minutes.

Will Conte drop Son to the bench, with Richarlison and Kulusevski either side of Kane? All will be revealed very soon!

Conte: Bissouma struggling tactically

16:17 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte has revealed Yves Bissouma is struggling to tactically adjust to his style of play and that is behind the midfielder’s lack of minutes for Tottenham.

Bissouma moved to Spurs in the summer from Brighton, arriving for an initial fee of £25million, but he has started just one game so far.

Instead, Conte has opted to stick with his central midfield pairing from last season of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur.

And now Conte has revealed that Bissouma is still getting used to playing in the way that the Italian wants him to.

“The only player that is struggling a bit with the tactical aspect is Bissouma, but also he is improving a lot in every aspect,” said Conte.

Kane at it again?

16:08 , Matt Verri

Safe to say Harry Kane will be looking forward to the match.

He’s scored 17 Premier League goals against Leicester, in just 14 games against the Foxes. Pretty rude really, considering he spent time on loan there.

Rodgers wants ‘aggression’ from Leicester

15:59 , Matt Verri

Brendan Rodgers wants his side to be brave against Tottenham, with the plan not to just sit back this evening.

Leicester have lost five of their first six league games, drawing the other one, and have conceded 16 goals in the process. Five of those came on the road against Brighton last time out, but Rodgers has urged his side to be brave.

“It’s clearly a big challenge,” Rodgers said during the week.

“They did very well last season and have some very talented players Antonio has them very organised and they have that quality.

“We know it’s going to be a very difficult game. We can’t sit back and let it happen. Our intention is to go and play our game, play with that courage and that aggression in our game.”

Conte: Son not happy

15:51 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte has revealed Son Heung-min‘s anger at his start to the season as the Tottenham manager ponders dropping the player for the first time.

Son, last season’s top scorer in the Premier League, is without a goal after six games, and also in two further Champions League matches.

His goal drought, and the subsequent form of summer signing Richarlison, has prompted suggestions that Son’s spot in the Conte’s starting line-up is under threat. Conte, since his appointment last November, has never dropped the South Korean.

“Sonny is not happy because he’s not scoring,” Conte said. “It’s normal and I like that he’s a bit angry with this situation because it means that he wants to try to change it, also because we need (him).

Perfect afternoon for it!

Prediction

15:31 , Matt Verri

Spurs have looked short at times and there could be some tired legs after the midweek clash.

But Leicester have looked incredibly vulnerable at the back all season, and it would be a big shock if they kept Tottenham’s front-line quiet.

Tottenham to win 2-1.

Leicester team news

15:22 , Matt Verri

Ricardo Pereira and Ryan Bertrand remain out for the Foxes, with no timescale put on their returns.

Leicester have little in the way of fresh injury concerns, although Dennis Praet has been struggling with a foot problem in recent days.

Tottenham team news

15:14 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte is expected to make changes to his Tottenham team.

Heung-min Son is one of those who could miss out, with Conte saying he isn’t “undroppable”. Kulusevski will hope to start in the front three as a result.

Clement Lenglet should come into the back-three for Ben Davies, while Ryan Sessegnon will hope to start at full-back.

Sessegnon should play on the left and Conte has hinted Ivan Perisic could move to the right as Emerson Royal is “a bit tired”.

Predicted Tottenham XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet; Perisic, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Richarlison.
