Boss Vincent Kompany said: "I'm not here sulking and feeling sorry for us but if you take every game, every season as a learning experience, this is a step we need to get into our game.

"Today the Premier League is over but tomorrow we start day one of doing everything we can to get back to the Premier League."

Luton Town are effectively relegated too, with their 3-1 defeat to West Ham leaving them three points behind Nottingham Forest and needing a miracle - a win plus a 13-goal swing on the final day of the season.

Boss Rob Edwards, who wiped away tears at full-time yesterday, said: "It is really difficult. "How the supporters reacted made me emotional.

"I said thank you to the players because they, along with the fans and board, have given me the best 18 months of my life.

"It has been an incredible journey and I always believed. Even at half-time I believed and I feel responsible. I am so disappointed we have not been able to do it."

With the Blades, Clarets and Hatters relegated and Town and Leicester City promoted automatically, the only spot left undecided in next season's Premier League is the Championship play-off winner.

Norwich host Leeds at 12 noon in their semi-final first leg, before West Brom entertain Southampton at 2.15pm.

Alex Jones offers his thoughts on the play-offs and predicts the winner here.
