It looks like Aston Villa are going to push ahead with a potential move for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

After they had a bid for Brighton’s Yves Bissouma turned down, Bentancur now appears to be the priority as Villa target a holding midfielder.

The Telegraph report that Luis Suarez has highly recommended the Uruguay midfielder to Steven Gerrard, and he is now the first-choice as Villa look to continue talks this week.

Bayern not looking at January deals

Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in recent days.

The Dutchman joined Barcelona in a big-money move in 2019, but has not been able to hit the heights expected of him at the Nou Camp.

Bayern president Herbert Hainer has downplayed the rumours though and suggested that the German club are not looking to do any January business.

“We have a very, very strong team - and I don’t see any reason why we should still do something in winter”, Hainer told Sky Germany.

‘Me, I would have gone. But if I am PSG, I would try to keep him. It’s him who will decide. PSG want to keep him, obviously, but does he want to stay?

‘I had the chance to play in different teams, different countries, with different champions, and that’s how I learned and grew.”

The idea of anybody having the resources capable of pulling Pep Guardiola away from Manchester City is outlandish of course but, according to The Sun, the Spaniard could be in line for a new offer.

The Dutch FA are believed to be ready to pounce when Guardiola does leave the Etihad and offer him the chance of managing the Netherlands.

Obviously, given his history with Johan Cruyff, it is a romantic notion.
