How Tottenham lost out on Luis Diaz
Tuesday 26 July 2022 13:14 , Jonathan Gorrie
Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has revealed he cut short his holiday during the January transfer window to help the club beat Tottenham to the signing of Luis Diaz.
Spurs chased a deal for the then-Porto forward earlier this year and saw an opening bid rejected before Jurgen Klopp’s side landed the Colombian international.
While the successful signing of Dejan Kuluesvki softened the blow for Antonio Conte, Diaz had a major impact himself upon his move to the Premier League, scoring four times and registering three assists in 13 appearances.
Decision-makers at Spurs have since backed Conte heavily this summer but the Diaz saga came during a difficult run of things for the club, who also missed out on the signing of Adama Traore.

Eriksen and Martinez arrive at Man United training
Tuesday 26 July 2022 12:31 , George Flood
Lisandro Martinez has been pictured arriving at Carrington ahead of his official unveiling as a Manchester United player.
The Argentine defender, 24, was spotted outside the Trafford Training Centre on Tuesday morning, catching a ride with another of United’s summer signings in Christian Eriksen.
Such an arrival was overshadowed by that of Cristiano Ronaldo, who also pulled into Carrington along with agent Jorge Mendes for crunch talks over his United future with manager Erik ten Hag.
Despite strong interest from Arsenal and a long drawn-out transfer saga, United finally won the race for Martinez last week, announcing they had reached an agreement with Ajax over a deal believed to be worth an initial £48.5million plus a potential further £8.5m in add-ons.
The centre-back was expected to pen a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option for a further 12 months, with the transfer subject to the usual medical and visa requirements.

Frenkie De Jong open to joining Chelsea
Tuesday 26 July 2022 10:57 , Jonathan Gorrie
Look away, Manchester United fans!
Part of the reason Frenkie De Jong is yet to join Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford is believed to be his love of playing for Barcelona, as well as (though much less romantic) the money owed to him.
While not exactly ideal, it’s a reasonable position to accept.
So, reports from Spanish outlet Sport will be a concern.
They claim the Dutch international is willing to move to Chelsea. Now, it’s up to them to pay the money both he and Barca are looking for.

The Blues’ bid fell slightly short of Kounde’s asking price and they are reluctant to go further for the 23-year-old who Thomas Tuchel was initially unsure about.
Barcelona have now taken over as favourites to win the France international’s signature, with an approach that mirrors the hijacking of Chelsea’s bid for Raphinha, but they currently also remain short of the asking price.

Tuesday 26 July 2022 09:53 , Jonathan Gorrie
Barcelona have made little secret of their desire to see Frenkie De Jong leave the club.

Tuesday 26 July 2022 09:26 , Jonathan Gorrie
Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester might look like a positive thing on the face of it.
While not too much can be taken from preseason friendlies, United have looked impressive during the early days of the Erik Ten Hag era and welcoming back last season’s top scorer should be another boost.
Still, accordng to The Sun, the 37-year-old is merely returning to tell the United boss he wants to leave now.

Tuesday 26 July 2022 08:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

Speaking to Forest’s official website, Lingard said: “Miltiadis [Marinakis] played a huge role in bringing me to the club.
“The owners showed a lot of love to me from the beginning and every time we spoke, they were really keen to get the deal sorted out and I loved the aggressive approach.

Tottenham latest
Tuesday 26 July 2022 07:31 , Jonathan Gorrie
While not a new signing in the truest sense of the words, Tottenham fans will be eager to know why Cristian Romero has not been announced as a permanent arrival yet.
The Argentine had a huge impact last season after joining on loan from Atalanta and looks set for another big season under Antonio Conte.
Football.london’s Alasdair Gold has revealed the reason as to why there has been a hold up.
“Cristian Romero, I’ve had a lot of people asking why it hasn’t been announced yet, really, quite simply it’s because it hasn’t actually happened yet,” he told his YouTube channel.
“I’ve been asking around about that. When it was first announced it was really complicated and confusing. Spurs announced it as a permanent, Atalanta announced it as a loan, and we now know it is a loan. Everyone I’ve spoken to about this deal has said it’s a complicated one,” Gold said.
“From what I understand about it, it initially was a season-long loan with an option not an obligation to buy him for £42.5m, but it was pretty much an obligation because the criteria that had to be met for it to become permanent were so likely to happen that it was an obligation in all but name.”

Man United’s Garner willing to make Premier League move
Monday 25 July 2022 18:19 , George Flood
James Garner is willing to leave Manchester United for a loan move to another Premier League club this summer.
The England Under-21 midfielder shone during a second successful stint at Nottingham Forest last term, helping to end the club’s 23-year exile from the top-flight via the Championship play-offs.
And while Garner’s first priority is to stay at Old Trafford and impress new manager Erik ten Hag, he is willing to join another Premier League outfit if it means continuing his development with more regular football and a step up in quality.
“I want to play for United,” Garner told the Press Association. “Of course that’s obviously my aim.
“But I feel like if I’m not going to be playing as regularly as I would like to then I’m definitely open to going back on loan to a Premier League side.”
How close did Arsenal come to Raphinha deal?
Monday 25 July 2022 18:15 , George Flood
Arsenal technical director Edu has opened up on the club’s failed summer pursuit of Raphinha.
The active Gunners are eager to further strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad with the addition of a new winger in the current window and initially emerged as strong favourites to sign Leeds’ prized asset.
North London rivals Tottenham were also interested in Raphinha, while it then looked for a long while as if Chelsea were set to clinch a deal before Barcelona eventually manoeuvred themselves into a position to be able to complete a transfer worth up to £55million.
Raphinha had been willing to wait on Barca despite the interest from that aforementioned London trio, with a Camp Nou switch always said to be his top priority.
Indeed, the Brazil international has wasted little time in impressing his new team-mates, scoring a stunning winning goal against fierce rivals Real Madrid in a pre-season Clasico in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Monday 25 July 2022 18:15 , George Flood

The Ukrainian international will provide competition and support for the injured Kieran Tierney at left-back, while he is also capable of being deployed in a central midfield role.
Zinchenko impressed during his early training sessions under Mikel Arteta - under whom he also worked at City during the Spaniard’s time as assistant to Pep Guardiola - on Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the United States, being trusted for an immediate start in Orlando, where he played the first 45 minutes of the shock 4-0 Florida Cup final drubbing of London rivals Chelsea.
Edu has since revealed his delight at signing the versatile 25-year-old, a long-term target for whom a move to the Emirates had been targeted since the start of the year.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that Southampton are now making a late play for Edozie, who began as a youngster at Millwall before heading to City in 2019.

Neville tweeted this afternoon: “De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him!
“A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach.

“I said to him one thing, which his agent said was really nice. I said: ‘Gabriel, I’m here to try to sign you, but not the Gabriel from this season, I want the Gabriel from the other seasons because this season you’ve not played the way I know you. You’ve lost your shine.”

The Gunners have also got rid of several players during that time, with some having their contracts mutually terminated.
That list includes the likes of Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Edu has now opened up on how some stars got “comfortable” on high wages.
“If a guy is performing and has a big salary, that’s not a problem,” he told reporters on Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the United States. “When the player is 26-plus, big salary and he’s not performing, he’s killing you.”

Chelsea fear transfer deja vu
Monday 25 July 2022 10:54 , Matt Verri

They face history repeating itself after losing Leeds United winger Raphinha in similar circumstances, with the 23-year-old France international being told to wait for the Catalan giants to raise funds for a move.
The La Liga side’s manager Xavi has been instrumental in convincing his targets to turn down the Blues, having also poached Andreas Christensen from Chelsea on a free transfer.
The Blues have alternative defensive targets in mind should they lose out to Barcelona for Kounde but they are all imperfect options.
They can do battle for Inter’s Milan Skriniar but would have to take on one of the world’s richest clubs in Paris Saint-Germain.
