·35-min read

Then there is the saga surrounding Frenkie de Jong and his future at the Camp Nou, with Chelsea and Manchester United strongly linked with the Barcelona midfielder. The Spaniards want to bring in Bernardo Silva as a replacement for him if a deal is arranged with Man City. while Marcos Alonso could move from Stamford Bridge to Catalunya.

Thomas Tuchel on the need for young defenders amid Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana chase

Monday 8 August 2022 19:00 , Jack Rathborn

“It is a lot of experience, it is maybe another of age, it is a lot of experience and they have their quality and they know what they are doing,” Tuchel said.

“We also need to make sure we have a new generation to take over in the next years but the guys are strong that is why they are under contract and the guys have our trust.

“There needs to be [balance]. I think it is necessary. The game in general is very physical and demands a lot. This is the situation. We knew it before.

“Azpi is the legend that he is, Thiago is in the moment still very important to us and when we had the chance to sign Kalidou we did it because we believe that he has some years ahead of him. But in general it is the fact that like the goalkeeper and the double sixes are in their thirties, and that is just what it is.

“Pace is an issue and speed is an issue. In all signings, this is the demand of the game that you can play one on ones, that you can defend space if needed with high-speed runs.”

Brilliant Brighton show transfer strategy works after Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma sales

Monday 8 August 2022 18:45 , Jack Rathborn

If there is a blueprint for winning at Old Trafford, it probably doesn’t involve selling your two best players. If the theory was that Brighton will emerge from the summer around £90million richer but poorer on the pitch without Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella, they conjured what – on paper, anyway – ranks as one of the best results in their history.

Although, perhaps, not even their finest against Manchester United since the start of May. A maiden win against Old Trafford was a second against United in swift succession; for 7 May, read 7 August. After a 4-0 victory at home, with the soon-to-be £90million pair, came a 2-1 victory away. United’s decline has to be factored into any evaluation but even February’s 2-0 defeat, when Brighton were the superior side for an hour, offered evidence that now they are a better team than United: not necessarily individually but definitely collectively.

“It was a big difference with their routines,” noted the beaten Erik ten Hag. “They are a long time together with a certain philosophy and plan, cooperation between coach and team.” It was a triumph of cohesion, coaching and continuity. Graham Potter supplied the context: taking over a team fourth from bottom, requiring results to persuade the doubters. “The way you convince people in football is to win and when you are Brighton and Hove Albion it can take you time to win,” he said.

Brilliant Brighton show there will be life after Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma

Fulham’s new faces and old give early optimism over survive and thrive Premier League plans

Monday 8 August 2022 18:30 , Jack Rathborn

At the interval on the opening weekend of the season, Fulham fans would have been riding high on optimism, not just for the 90 minutes but for the season and even beyond.

It wasn’t just that they were beating Liverpool, nor even that they were deservedly ahead. Nor was it solely about the usual (and warranted) over-excitement of a Premier League return, more impending transfer arrivals in the final week of the window or the prospect of clocking up about 8 per cent of the points required to stay up already, on day one.

The added surge of hope and belief would also have been in part due to the debut performance of Joao Palhinha, a summer signing from Sporting CP who had previously been linked with bigger, more established top-flight clubs. On the basis of how he handled Liverpool’s midfield in that opening period, maybe a few are already regretting their hesitation.

Leicester to keep faith in Danny Ward rather than turn to transfer market for new goalkeeper

Monday 8 August 2022 18:00 , Jack Rathborn

Ward made just his second Premier League appearance in over four years for the Foxes in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Brentford after Kasper Schmeichel’s departure to Ligue 1 side Nice.

Rodgers said Daniel Iversen would also be challenging for the role last week when Schmeichel ended his 11-year stay at the King Power Stadium before handing Ward the number one jersey for his side’s Premier League opener.

Frenkie de Jong’s deferred wages explained: Why Barcelona stand-off is part of growing trend

Monday 8 August 2022 17:30 , Jack Rathborn

If the long and protracted Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has not already been messy enough, there is one way of making it a whole lot messier. “De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him,” Gary Neville tweeted last week. “A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach. @FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.”

Predictably, Neville’s tweet did not go down well among Barcelona’s support – with some even going as far as to pretend his infamous spell in charge of Valencia went even worse than it actually did – but you do not have to be a former Manchester United right-back to sympathise with the sentiment behind it. For a financially-challenged club like Barça to push a player out so that they can fund a summer of extravagant spending is one thing. To do so while refusing to pay him wages that he is owed is another entirely.

On this day in 2011: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signs for Arsenal

Monday 8 August 2022 14:09 , Jack Rathborn

Arsenal completed the £15million signing of Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on this day in 2011.

Saints announced that Oxlade-Chamberlain had moved to the Emirates Stadium in a club-record sale. The Gunners paid £12million up front with a further £3m in add-ons.

Arsene Wenger hailed Oxlade-Chamberlain, 17, as a player of rich potential.

“We are delighted that Alex has decided to join us,” said Wenger. “He is an exciting young player who will provide us with creativity and offensive quality.

“Alex is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions. He can play as an attacking centre midfielder, or wide left and right.

“Alex is a perceptive passer of the ball and has a great understanding of the game and looks to be a very good team player.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain had yet to compete at a higher level than League One, but his signing was viewed as a coup for Arsenal, despite the size of the transfer fee.

Manchester United and Liverpool also expressed interest in the Southampton academy product, but the Gunners edged their rivals.

“Arsenal have a great manager in Arsene Wenger, top-quality players and an attractive style of play,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“These were all important factors in me choosing to sign for Arsenal.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain played 198 games and scored 20 goals in his six seasons with the Gunners, winning the FA Cup three times before he signed for Liverpool in August 2017.

He won the Champions League with the Reds in 2019 and the Premier League the following season. He has also represented England on 35 occasions.

Monday 8 August 2022 13:32 , Ben Burrows

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the performance of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kalidou Koulibaly on Saturday but with the back three having a combined age of 100 he knows the club must secure the next generation of defenders.

"We are so happy to have players such as Azpi, Thiago and Kalidou but it is also important that we have the next generation coming through to eventually take over from them in future years," he said.

"The game is very physical and very demanding, this is the situation, so we do need other players to rotate with these guys.

"In general, it is a fact that we have the back three, the goalkeeper and the double six in Jorginho and N'Golo (Kante) that are all in their thirties.

"That's the way it is and while we are so happy with these guys, we also need to consider the future."

Premier League predictions: Our writers predict signing of the season

Monday 8 August 2022 11:35 , Jack Rathborn

Miguel Delaney: Ivan Perisic, who I think is one of those players who doesn’t just represent exactly what his manager wants, but will have a multiplying effect that makes him inspired.

Richard Jolly: Darwin Nunez. The Community Shield suggested Liverpool’s fine run in the transfer market should continue. But for a value-for-money pick, James Tarkowski on a free transfer for Everton is up there.

Mark Critchley: Cheick Doucoure, Boubacar Kamara and Tyrell Malacia all feel like smart and cheap (or at least cheap-ish) pick-ups. Ivan Perisic is the type of move not every top club would have made but suits Tottenham’s system perfectly.

Ben Burrows: Kalidou Koulibaly. He seems the safest bet of Chelsea’s bevvy of new signings to hit the ground running the best with his experience and leadership qualities sorely needed in the Blues’ backline.

Jack Rathborn: Kalidou Koulibaly. Big shoes to fill in Antonio Rudiger, but has an excellent combination of physicality and composure on the ball and I’d expect the transition to be smooth with compatriot Edouard Mendy between the sticks.

Chelsea and Leicester £10m apart on Wesley Fofana valuation

Monday 8 August 2022 11:22 , Jack Rathborn

Chelsea are currently £10m short of Leicester City‘s valuation for Wesley Fofana, as the London club prepare another bid that could spark their busiest period of the window. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy are also working on deals for Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

While Leicester’s public stance is that neither Fofana nor James Maddison are for sale, sources close to the situation insist the club’s financial circumstances - which has seen the Thai owners’ duty free-based business suffer through two years of the pandemic - means one will likely have to go, albeit at high prices.

The feeling within the market is that Fofana is gettable for £80m and Maddison for £60m. Newcastle United remain someway short of the latter price, and Leicester would be more keen to keep the playmaker.

Luis Campos is leading the charge to fend off Real Madrid interest, with the Spaniard preferring to convince the Spaniard to wait until 2023 and sign on a free transfer.

PSG and Napoli may also work together on a deal for Keylor Navas.

Manchester United target Marko Arnautovic as cover for Cristiano Ronaldo

Monday 8 August 2022 10:42 , Jack Rathborn

Manchester United intend to sign Marko Arnautovic as cover for Cristiano Ronaldo rather than as a replacement for the wantaway centre-forward.

United are pursuing a deal with Bologna for the 33-year-old Arnautovic to bolster manager Erik ten Hag’s options in attack, viewing him as a useful squad player and a short-term option.

Arnautovic started out on his senior career under the guidance of Steve McClaren while at FC Twente, while Ten Hag was working as McClaren’s assistant, before turning out for Internazionale, Stoke and West Ham.

Borussia Dortmund keen on Callum Hudson-Odoi with Chelsea future in doubt

Monday 8 August 2022 10:31 , Jack Rathborn

Borussia Dortmund have renewed their interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi with the Chelsea winger’s future in doubt after being left out of the matchday squad to face Everton.

With the 21-year-old out of Thomas Tuchel’s immediate plans, a loan or permanent deal is possible, according to the Standard.

Hudson-Odoi has two years remaining on his contract, and after spending almost £168m this summer, the player could bring in revenue to balance the books.

Big money transfers ‘make no sense’ for Southampton, Ralph Hasenhuttl claims

Monday 8 August 2022 10:18 , Jack Rathborn

Ralph Hasenhuttl has insisted big-money signings “make no sense” for Southampton.

Saints have already brought in six recruits ahead of the new campaign, with further additions still being sought.

Manager Hasenhuttl believes spending upwards of £40million on one player remains off Southampton’s agenda however, with the south coast club continuing to focus on young, upwardly mobile targets.

“I’m still of the opinion that £40 or £50million transfers make no sense for us,” said Hasenhuttl. “But we of course want quality, and if it’s young, OK, no problem, take it.

“This is the way we want to go and it’s good that we have done our job so far. But the transfer window is open so long that, if we do something we have enough time to do it.”

Adrien Rabiot targeted by Manchester United as Frenkie De Jong alternative

Monday 8 August 2022 09:50 , Jack Rathborn

Manchester United have identified Adrien Rabiot from Juventus as a target, possibly as an alternative to Frenkie De Jong, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

With talks dragging for De Jong, the France midfielder could be a quick and cheaper fix with just one year remaining on his Juventus contract.

With Paul Pogba out injured, it is unclear whether the Old Lady will be prepared to lose a key depth player before bringing in a replacement.

Goncalo Guedes set for Wolves move for £27.5m

Monday 8 August 2022 09:38 , Jack Rathborn

Goncalo Guedes is set to join Wolves from Valencia for £27.5m.

The Portuguese forward is now set for a medical on Monday and will bolster Bruno Lage’s attacking option following Raul Jimenez’s injury that sees him out for the start of the season.

Hwang Hee-chan started up against Leeds but does not look to be the answer, while Wolves scored just 38 times last season, a total only better than the three relegated clubs, Burnley, Watford and Norwich.

Guedes will be able to play on the wing or as a striker and joins the Premier League side after scoring 23 goals in 113 matches since a €40m move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018.

Raheem Sterling to Chelsea: The first true Thomas Tuchel signing and a perfect fit

Monday 8 August 2022 09:25 , Jack Rathborn

There is a song that will not be heard at the Etihad Stadium this season; not unless a corner of Chelsea supporters chorus it, anyway.

Raheem Sterling, he’s top of the league,” was part of the soundtrack of Manchester City’s surge to four Premier League titles in five seasons.

And if it was scarcely the wittiest of chants, it felt one of the more meaningful. It was an assertion of superiority while highlighting one of the reasons for it.

Alexis Sanchez primed to join Marseille

Monday 8 August 2022 09:15 , Jack Rathborn

Olympique Marseille look primed to sign Alexis Sánchez, reports Fabrizio Romano.

The Chilean is set to end ties with Inter Milan and can then join the French giants on a free transfer.

OM will then offer the former Manchester United and Arsenal forward a contract until 2024.

Liverpool weigh up Marcelo Brozovic swap deal

Monday 8 August 2022 09:05 , Jack Rathborn

Liverpool are weighing up a swap deal for Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

The Reds could freshen up their midfield with the Croatian, and the Nerazzurri could entertain a deal should Naby Keita or Roberto Firmino be sent in the opposite direction, report Calciomercato.

Keita’s injury history may force Jurgen Klopp to dip into the market to provide added depth, particularly with a two-point deficit to Manchester City in the title race already.

Bayern Munich respond to Leroy Sane to Man United rumours

Monday 8 August 2022 08:55 , Jack Rathborn

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has dismissed rumours linking Leroy Sane to Manchester United.

Sane has 25 goals in 91 appearances since joining Bayern from Manchester City for £50m in 2020.

“There’s no truth to that,” Salihamidzic told Sky90. “He’s an important player for us. There [is] nothing to say about that at all.”

Premier League predictions: Our writers predict signing of the season

Monday 8 August 2022 08:45 , Jack Rathborn

Karl Matchett: Cheick Doucoure or Boubacar Kamara. Both add a brilliant holding midfield presence and ball-winning for teams who really needed it last year and are going places. They can elevate those sides and are really smart additions.

Alex Pattle: Darwin Nunez. Given that Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have outperformed the more optimistic expectations at Liverpool, it seems Nunez may just follow in their footsteps.

Michael Jones: Ivan Perisic. Full of experience and versatility, he could help take Spurs to another level under boss Antonio Conte who will utilise him as an attacking wingback.

Jamie Braidwood: Oleksandr Zinchenko. His technical ability is outstanding and, if he gets the chance, I think he has the character to take responsibility of Arsenal’s midfield alongside Martin Odegaard. He showed for Ukraine that he can dominate games and it’s now about doing that in the Premier League.

Kieran Jackson: Jesse Lingard. Much like his loan move to West Ham triggered a reaction, consistent minutes under Steve Cooper will see the ex-Man Utd playmaker as Forest’s focal point, both on the pitch and the terraces. And if he hits the ground running, who knows? Maybe Qatar beckons come November too…

Callum Hudson-Odoi ‘asks to leave Chelsea on loan’ with Leicester and Southampton keen

Callum Hudson-Odoi has reportedly asked Chelsea to go out on loan and there are at least two Premier League clubs ready to snap him up.

The winger searching for more regular playing time after not even being named on the bench when the Blues opened their league campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

Manchester United see Marko Arnautovic bid rejected

Monday 8 August 2022 08:23 , Jack Rathborn

Manchester United have seen a £7.5m bid for Marko Arnautovic rejected, report the Mail.

The 33-year-old scored 14 goals in Serie A last term for Bologna and has Premier League experience from his time at West Ham and Stoke.

Erik ten Hag knows the Austrian from his time in the Eredivisie, too, meaning he can provide cover up top and a physical presence currently lacking.
