15:56 , Matt Verri

Josko Gvardiol admits Liverpool are his “dream” club ahead of what is expected to be a transformative summer for the RB Leipzig defender.

Both Chelsea and Manchester City are among the clubs keen on the 20-year-old, with something of a bidding war expected this summer. Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also believed to be in the race.

Speaking to RTLDanas, Gvardiol said when asked of his dream club: “That would definitely be Liverpool.

“Since I was little, I watched a lot of their matches with my dad.

“We covered every season in detail. It is a club that has remained in my heart.”

Latest on Fernandez

15:29 , Matt Verri

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt says the club are ready to “restart from zero” with Enzo Fernandez after Chelsea’s botched move to sign the midfielder.

The Lisbon giants are unhappy with the Blues’ pursuit of the 21-year-old, who helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar last month.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea were looking to pay Fernandez’s huge release clause of £112m over a series of instalments as they bid to stay in line with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Benfica, however, are eager to keep the player in the Portuguese capital until the end of the season, having only signed him from River Plate in August.

Barber on Caicedo interest

14:53 , Matt Verri

Brighton CEO Paul Barber has confirmed no offers have been received for Moises Caicedo.

When he was in charge at the club, Graham Potter said £42m would only get the midfielder’s boots, and Caicedo is now once again being linked with a move away from the Seagulls. Liverpool are reportedly extremely keen.

“I’m pleased to say we haven’t had any [offers]. Maybe Liverpool haven’t got my email because I haven’t seen any,” Barber toldCBS Sports.

“I’m not sure £42m will even include the boots now, maybe just the laces. But joking aside, every player’s value is ultimately determined by the market.

“Graham’s comments were part in jest but part serious because Moises has been an exceptional player for us.

“Since he came to the Premier League, he has developed all the time. He’s a young man with a great attitude, fantastic work ethic and a very nice human being off the pitch.

“So all those things contribute to the value of a footballer should it come to that moment to sell.”

Chelsea spending continues...

Chelsea have officially finalised the signing of striker David Datro Fofana from Molde.

The Blues confirmed they had reached an agreement to sign the 20-year-old at the end of December, and the move has now been wrapped up with Fofana signing a six-and-a-half-year contract. There is an option to extend for a further 12 months.

Fofana, signed for £8.6m, was in the stands at the City Ground last weekend as his new team-mates drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.

“Hello dear fans, I’m here, I’ve arrived well and I’m very happy to sign for the club of my dreams,” Fofana told the club’s official website.

“I’ll see you soon on the pitch, cheers!”

It’s safe to say Erik ten Hag is not particularly impressed with the business Manchester United have done in recent seasons.

“The club has bought an unimaginable number of players in recent years who have not been good enough,” the United boss said.

“Most purchases have been average - and at Man United average is not good enough. United’s shirt weighs heavily.

“Only real personalities, who can perform under great pressure, can play here.”

Celtic to lose race for World Cup striker

12:22 , Matt Verri

South Korea striker Cho Gue-sung will choose a move to Mainz over Celtic in the January transfer window, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

The 24-year-old scored twice for his national team in Qatar at the World Cup, both coming in a three-minute spell against Ghana, and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have allowed him to pursue a £2.5million move to Europe.

Mainz are now expected to win the race for the striker who they made their number one target, beating Celtic and other clubs in the United States.

Former Manchester United winger Park Ji-Sung is negotiating the deal for Jeonbuk from London as their technical director.

Cho wants to complete the move as soon as possible to join Mainz before they restart their season on January 21, with German football having a prolonged break after the World Cup.

Mudryk to Arsenal has ‘minimal’ chance

11:30 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have been told Shakhtar Donetsk’s valutation of Mykhaylo Mudryk will likely prevent them from completing a deal this month.

The Gunners are still leading Chelsea in the race for the 21-year-old, but they have been warned by Ukrainian football agent Igor Kryvenko that Shakhtar will not look at the situation “realistically” and are instead eyeing a huge sum to make up for previous mistakes in the market.

“Minimal,” Kryvenko told Footboom of the Gunners’ chances of securing the winger in January.

“Shakhtar won’t let Mudryk go for the money they are currently offering. €100m is an inadequate price

“A player from the Ukrainian championship cannot cost more than, for example, a player from the Netherlands. You have to look at things realistically. There is a market value, and Shakhtar seem to be taking figures from the ceiling.

West Ham could be forced into market

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested it is best the club's wantaway players leave in January, amid ongoing interest in Arsenal target Youri Tielemans.

Rodgers has previously ruled out the likes of Tielemans leaving during the season, but now appears to have changed his tune.

It remains to be seen if the Gunners are still interested in the player.

"I think that if someone doesn’t want to be here or someone wants too much money to be here, we have to be brave enough to say ‘listen, thank you very much and on you go’, because we are not a club with masses of resources that can facilitate every single players need, especially from a financial side," he told reporters earlier.

"A number of these guys are down to their last year. We said before we’d like them to stay but there has to be a point in time when what they want is too demanding for us as a club and if the time is right, they have to move on, then we have to do that and then look forward."

Chelsea sent message over Enzo Fernandez deal

Friday 6 January 2023 07:42 , George Flood

Here is more from an angry Schmidt on Chelsea’s seemingly ill-fated pursuit of Enzo Fernandez:

"Enzo, we don't want to sell him, nobody wants to sell him at this club," he said. "Everybody knows he has a clause in his contract and, of course, if the player wants to leave and somebody comes and pays the clause we cannot work against that and so then maybe we will lose the player.

"There's a club who want our player, they know we don't want to sell the player, they tried to get the player on their side and they know that they only can get this player when they pay the clause so it's a very clear situation."

He added: "First of all Enzo is a very good boy and a fantastic football player. We like him a lot and, of course, we want that he stays at Benfica.

"Of course, the situation for him is not so easy because he played the World Cup, he became world champion, he got offers, and there's a lot of money on the table.

"In this situation as a young player you think about that, [it can] confuse you a little bit. I think that everybody can understand but, nevertheless, he's a very good boy.

"He was not there last week, he had no permission to go to Argentina. He missed the training so that is not acceptable [and] that's why it will have consequences."

Chelsea blasted over Enzo Fernandez talks

Friday 6 January 2023 07:39 , George Flood

In case you missed it yesterday, Benfica boss Roger Schmidt is furious with Chelsea for their pursuit of Enzo Fernandez.

It appeared this week as if a blockbuster transfer for Argentina’s young World Cup-winning midfielder was now just one step away, yet talks have since collapsed with the Portuguese club demanding that his €105m release clause is met in full.

Chelsea, meanwhile, want to spread the cost of the deal, a proposition dismissed by Benfica chief Rui Costa.

Schmidt clearly feels such an approach is disrespectful and having a damaging impact on Fernandez, who is set to be disciplined by his current club after taking an unsanctioned trip back to Argentina.

“What the club is doing who wants Enzo, it’s disrespectful against all of us, against Benfica and I cannot accept what they are doing,” said Schmidt.

“To make the player crazy, and then to pretend they can pay the clause and later they want negotiate I think is not what I understand about a good relationship between clubs who maybe want to discuss about the player.”

Chelsea boost in Mudryk fight with Arsenal

Friday 6 January 2023 07:28 , George Flood

The Mykhaylo Mudryk saga continues, with the presence of Shakhtar’s top brass in London this week fuelling further daily rumours regarding Arsenal and Chelsea.

It appears that club legend and director of football Darijo Srna’s movements on Thursday have led many to believe that it is the injury-stricken Blues who are now firmly in the driving seat for the signature of Ukraine’s budding superstar.

The Croatian was spotted dining with Willian in a London restaurant yesterday - a player who represented both clubs during his career but surely still holds a much greater affinity for Chelsea despite now turning out for rivals Fulham.

It is worth noting that former Arsenal, Shakhtar and Croatia striker Eduardo was also present at the dinner, however.

Srna was then later seen in the stands at Stamford Bridge last night as Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League.
