Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah had a breakout season in 2023/24. Brought into the side in place of the injured Joël Matip, Quansah surpassed expectations and delivered some brilliant performances alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Reds' defense.

Quansah's form was so good for Liverpool that Joe Gomez, a natural center-back, was used in other positions other than his own when he was called upon by Jürgen Klopp. Moreover, Ibrahima Konaté was dropped to the bench in the final weeks of the season in favor of Quansah.

In short, the 21-year-old produced a very good season. This was reflected in Gareth Southgate's decision to call him up to the England provisional squad for Euro 2024. Quansah was one of the surprise names on the list and, in the end, he was cut from the final squad last last week by Southgate, along with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.

However, two players who will be playing in the competition have sent messages to Quansah to boost his morale. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk responded to Quansah's Instagram post, in which he wished his English teammates well at the tournament and reflected on an 'incredible experience' training with the England squad.

Alexander-Arnold responded with a 'future is bright' message, while Van Dijk posted the high-five emoji. Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards had predicted back in April that perhaps Euro 2024 was a bit too early for him and his international career.

“He’s not played every single game and he probably wouldn’t be playing if other players were fit," said Richards at the time on the 'Rest Is Football' podcast. “But yeah, I think the factor of playing alongside Van Dijk has obviously helped him, if it was say Quansah and Gomez and he was playing at the same level, I’d probably agree with that [idea of going to the Euros].

“He has been outstanding for a young player, especially in the Man City game when they had [Conor] Bradley at right back and him centre-half. I believe that he really showed his maturity in that game, but in terms of England, I think it’s a little bit early for him.”

Quansah made 33 appearances for Liverpool last season in all competitions. Next season, he will hope to step up again. The fact that he misses the European Championship will at least mean he gets a good rest and then a full pre-season.

Liverpool.com says: Euro 2024 likely was a tournament slightly too early for Quansah, but he got a taste of what it's like to be called up by his country ahead of a major tournament. It'll drive him on to make sure he's not cut from the World Cup 2026 side where he must be a leading contender to be on the plane.
