Tribe Soccer shuts out Chapel Hill, 3-0, in Longview Tournament action

Jan. 11—LONGVIEW — Jacksonville Tribe Soccer opened its run in the Longview Tournament by blanking Chapel Hill's Bulldogs, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at Lobo Stadium.

The victory was Jacksonville's second-straight by shutout, as the Tribe seem to be settling into a nice early-season groove. Jacksonville (2-2-1) also blanked North Forney, 5-0, on Saturday.

Tribe head coach Rudy Jaramillo said that his team took its lumps against some Class 6A schools in the Forney Tournament last week, and that the Tribe should be the better for the lesson learned as a result of playing up in class.

Jacksonville's first goal came at the 35:38 mark of the first half. Jonathan Frias launched a laser of a ground shot from about 23 yards out, left side, that slipped in between the Bulldog keeper and the near side net.

Armando Lara was credited with what turned out to be Jacksonville's final goals of the tilt. His first shot came from around eight yards out and took place with about 7:00 minutes left in the opening half.

Lara struck again with 5:25 left in the first half. At that juncture he took control of a deflection from near the post and tapped it in for the Tribe's third goal of the half.

There was no scoring in the final 40:00 minutes of play.

The Jacksonville defense didn't allow Chapel Hill (1-2-1) a single shot for the first 33:14 of the second half in posting another solid effort in front of keeper Davy Smith.

Smith earned the clean sheet win by making seven saves.

The Tribe amassed 27 shots, compared to Chapel Hill's 10.

Jacksonville (2-2-1) will face Henderson at 6 p.m. Friday and close out tournament play with a 10 a.m. match Saturday against Lufkin.
