Tuesday's preps: Fairfield wrestlers score wins at North Mahaska

Jan. 3—NEW SHARON — The Fairfield boys wrestling team fired out of the holiday break on Tuesday, scoring three consecutive dual wins at North Mahaska. The Trojans edged Chariton, 43-36, and the hosting Warhawks, 42-32, before rolling to a 53-12 win over Wapello improving to 7-3 in duals this season.

Three consecutive pins by Dain Burkhart (175), Carter Moore (190) and Dre Smithburg (215) clinched Fairfield's win over Chariton. Moore, Smithburg and Logan Johnson (285) also went on a run of three straight falls for the Trojans to again rally Fairfield against North Mahaska from a 26-19 deficit.

The Fairfield girls wrestling team also scored a win on Tuesday night at North Mahaska. Samantha Lyons pinned Amara Edwards-Hinton in 62 seconds of a 170-pound match for the Trojans.

Fairfield will be back on the mat at home on Thursday. The Trojans will be wrestling Keokuk in Southeast Conference action starting at 6:30 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Holy Trinity 69, Fairfield 44

FORT MADISON — Despite a strong start to their first game out of the holiday break, the Trojans could not hold off a strong charge in the second half from the Crusaders. Paced by a 24-point effort from Luke Hellige, Holy Trinity clinched the win down the stretch outscoring Fairfield 25-3 in the fourth quarter.

Ben Boatright came within a rebound of a double-double, leading the Trojans with 14 points and nine boards. Riley Perkins added 11 points for Fairfield, who opened the game outscoring Holy Trinity 16-10 in the opening quarter.

Fairfield (1-9) returns to Southeast Conference action on Friday at home at Mount Pleasant.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fairfield 59, Van Buren County 42

FAIRFIELD — Savannah Hollander led all scorers with 23 points while Grace Lyon added 16 as the Trojans began 2024 the way they ended 2023, scoring a win on the hardwood pulling away in the second half outscoring the Warriors 38-21 over the final 16 minutes at Dan Breen Gymnasium.

Sophia Jirak led Van Buren County with 13 points in the loss. Marlee Mertens and Ivy Davidson each added 11 points.

Van Buren County (1-7) continues a busy week at Columbus on Thursday before hosting Mediapolis on Friday. Fairfield (2-7) heads to Mount Pleasant in Southeast Conference action on Friday.
