TUF 21 Finale Results: Kamaru Usman Captures TUF Title for the Blackzilians with Submission Win

American Top Team pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind regular season win over rival camp the Blackzilians during The Ultimate Fighter 21. With their backs against the wall, ATT rallied to win three consecutive fights to swing the team points in their favor heading into the finale.

On Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the Blackzilians got the last laugh when Kamaru Usman submitted ATT’s Hayder Hassan to win the welterweight tournament and the team title.

Hassan was responsible for half of ATT’s points by winning three times during the season. A fight between he and Usman, who won twice during the show, had been brewing since the first episode.

Usman wasted little time before working to get the fight to the ground. Hassan was unable to defend Usman’s takedown attempts and found himself in bad positioning throughout the opening round.

Hassan came out aggressive in the second frame, stunning Usman with an uppercut. Usman reacted quickly and ducked under a punch and took Hassan down. Usman applied an arm-triangle choke and moved to the side to lock it down. Hassan tried to defend the submission but was forced to tap out.

“I feel great. It’s been a long road. I’ve been working so hard for this,” said Usman following the win. “I knew I could get the job done for us.”

“It’s just something that I’ve added to my arsenal. My jiu-jitsu coach, Jorge Santiago, we work a lot of different positions,” Usman said about the finish. “It’s one thing to get somebody down on the ground, but it’s another thing to be able to finish them there.”

Blackzilians founder Glenn Robinson relished the victory over his rivals, but also gave props to the defeated Hassan.

“Hyder is such a dangerous and talented fighter. I have nothing but a deep respect for him, but I know Kamaru is such a well-rounded fighter,” said Robinson. “I love Kamaru with all my heart. I’ve seen him grow up from the time that he walked in our gym. I knew what he was capable of doing. I’ve seen him practice that choke over and over again. I’ve had complete confidence in him. I’m just so proud.”

With the win, the Blackzilians earned The Ultimate Fighter trophy, $300,000 and Usman is the new owner of a custom Harley Davidson.
