The first two minutes of the bout consisted of the fighters measuring each other with very little action. It wasn't until Thompson threw a kick that Woodley caught, allowing him to bring the fight to the ground. From there, Woodley battered away at Thompson, bloodying up his face with ground and pound.

The second round had Thompson controlling the center of the Octagon while Woodley largely had his back against the cage. Thompson threw various strikes as Woodley attempted to dodge and circle away. Thompson appeared to find his rhythm in the second.

Woodley countered in the third, landing significant strikes a number of times. Thompson, however, continued finding success while his opponent's back was against the cage, landing punch combinations on Woodley at various moments.

In the fourth, Woodley landed two strong right hands that wobbled Thompson, one reeling him back, the other knocking him down. Woodley continued the onslaught until he worked to get a guillotine choke. Thompson, though, persevered and got out of the hold to work from guard and throw strikes through the end of the round.

Woodley had trouble finding his mark in the fifth, seemingly tired from reaching the championship rounds. Thompson was able to pepper away with strikes and the two finished the 25-minute affair on the feet.

In a rare moment, Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer misspoke and announced the fight as a split-decision win for Woodley. However, after some in-Octagon discussion and during Woodley's post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Buffer interupted the spot to announce the true result being a majority draw. Woodley appeared upset by the mistake, reflected shortly on the fight with Rogan and then walked out of the cage with his head down.
