UFC 188 Medical Suspensions: Werdum and Alvarez Out Up to Six Months

UFC 188 Medical Suspensions: Werdum and Alvarez Out Up to Six Months

Fabricio Werdum upset Cain Velasquez to unify the heavyweight championship at UFC 188 on Saturday night, but he didn’t escape unscathed. In fact, Werdum topped the list of medical suspensions with potentially a much lengthier suspension than Velasquez.

Werdum bloodied Velasquez en route to a third-round submission finish to claim the belt. The cost was a potential six-month medical suspension, unless Werdum gets and MRI to clear his right knee and thumb, as well as a nasal x-ray. Velasquez’s injuries were superficial, with eyelid and eyebrow lacerations putting him on the sidelines for 45 days.

Co-main event winner Eddie Alvarez was also handed a six-month suspension unless he gets cleared by an ophthalmologist.
