UFC 195 Results: Michael McDonald Subs Masanori Kanehara for a Victorious Return

UFC Fight Night 91 Medical Suspensions: Michael McDonald Sidelined for Two Months

Former UFC bantamweight challenger Michael McDonald finally made his return to the Octagon at UFC 195: Lawler vs. Condit on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Having spent the past two years on the sidelines dealing with injuries and surgeries, McDonald squared off with Japanese veteran Masanori Kanehara, in a tough return bout.

Kanehara dominated the first round, scoring an early takedown. McDonald caught him in a guillotine choke on the way down, but Kanehara never showed any sign of being in danger, eventually slipped out, and kept McDonald on his back for the remainder of the round, although he was unable to mount any damage.

The fact that he didn’t do any damage may have come back to haunt Kanehara in the second round, as McDonald still looked fresh as the round got underway. He withstood some early striking by McDonald and scored another takedown early in the frame.

Looking strong on the canvas, Kanehara transitioned from side control to mount and then back to side control, where he had an arm triangle choke locked on. It looked tight, but McDonald waited it out and somehow slipped out of the choke. He immediately took Kanehara’s back and sunk in a rear naked choke that forced the Japanese fighter to tap.

With nary a sign of ring rust, it was certainly a big relief for McDonald to finally get back in the Octagon and get a victory.

“I’ve been fighting very often since I was 14, so that was my first long break. It was tough,” McDonald said after the fight.

Having lost two of his three fights before being sidelined by injuries, McDonald’s victory was a great way to kick off his comeback. He now stands at 17-3 overall as he tries to climb back into the hunt for a title shot.
