UFC 203 Results: Fabricio Werdum Defeats Travis Browne in Controversial Fight

Former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum bounced back from losing the title in his last outing by defeating Travis Browne in the UFC 203 co-main event on Saturday in a fight filled with controversy.

Browne was hoping to avenge a 2014 loss to Werdum, but ended up on the losing end of a one-sided fight inside the Quicken Loans Arena.

Werdum showed no hesitation in his game after suffering a knockout loss to Stipe Miocic in May. At the sound of the opening bell, Werdum charged across the octagon and delivered a flying sidekick to the face of Browne. Throughout the bout, Werdum employed high-risk techniques and outworked his opponent.

Midway through the opening round the first controversy happened. Werdum threw a right hand and Browne blocked it with his hand but suffered a broken finger in the process. Browne turned away from Werdum and got the attention of the referee, who temporarily stopped the action. Browne showed his finger to the referee and a ringside doctor and the fight was then restarted.

“There are no timeouts in fighting. He can’t just do that. It’s part of the game,” said Marc Ratner, UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and former Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Once the fight was resumed, Werdum dropped Browne with a right hand and dominated the action. Browne had limited use of his right hand and was picked apart by Werdum.

The second controversy came after the fight. Before the official scores were read, Browne’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan got into a brief scuffle with Werdum. Werdum delivered a front kick to the body of Tarverdyan and the corners had to be removed from the octagon to prevent the situation from escalating. Once the tempers calmed and the cage was cleared of everyone but the fighters, referee and cameramen, the scores were read revealing Werdum as the winner by unanimous decision.

“I think he broke the finger. He broke his finger. He’s a very warrior guy because he kept going in the fight. I love this. I respect Travis Browne. It’s the second time that I’ve beat him. It was a good fight,” said Werdum following the win.

“I think my punch got his finger, but the referee didn’t stop the fight. He hadn’t stopped the fight,” he said. “The referee is there to stop or keep it going. He didn’t say nothing, I kept it going. That’s it.”

With the win, Werdum believes that he's put himself right back in title contention. For Browne, it was the first time he's suffered back-to-back losses in his seven-year fighting career.

“I'm going to come back and fight for my title. I'm going to get what's mine,” said Werdum.
