New UFC Champ Daniel Cormier to Defend Title Against Alexander Gustafsson
Daniel Cormier will defend his new UFC light heavyweight belt against Alexander Gustafsson, Dana White said on Wednesday.
White went on FOX Sports 1's UFC Tonight and revealed the fight is in the works with a date being finalized.
Cormier (16-1) took on Anthony Johnson for the vacant UFC 205-pound title at UFC 187, following former champ Jon Jones' suspension and stripping of the title for legal issues outside of the Octagon. Cormier looked in trouble early against Johnson, but persevered and worked in a rear-naked choke in the third round to win the title.
Gustafsson (16-3) gets a rare shot at UFC gold, coming off a loss to Johnson in his previous outing. Two fights prior to that, Gustafsson fought Jones for the title in 2013, giving the then-champion the toughest fight he had seen up to that point in his career.
A date and venue are being finalized for the Cormier-Gustafsson bout, White said. MMAWeekly.com will update the location of the bout as more information becomes available.
