UFC Fight Night 85 Results: Neil Magny Becomes First Fighter Ever to Finish Hector Lombard

Lorenz Larkin Steps in for Short-Notice Fight with Neil Magny at UFC 202

Saturday night’s UFC Fight Night 85 co-main event was a battle between two welterweights trying to find a spot in the title picture.

Neil Magny entered the fight in Brisbane, Australia, having won nine of his last 10 bouts in the Octagon, including his previous two fights.

Hector Lombard stepped in the cage under much different circumstances. He was returning from a year-long suspension due to having tested positive for steroids after his most recent fight. His bout with Josh Burkman, originally would have been his third consecutive win since dropping to welterweight, but it was instead changed to a no contest.

Lombard nearly got back in the win column by putting the fight away in the first minute of the first round, as he stormed Magny and dropped him with a combination of punches. He followed Magny to the canvas and unloaded. Inexplicably, Magny survived wave after wave of Lombard bombs for about the first three minutes of the fight.

Magny eventually escaped to his feet and didn’t take long to shake the cobwebs out of his skull, as he pulled Lombard into his Thai clinch for a jumping knee, and then proceeded to find his striking rhythm as the round wound down.

“I was pretty wobbled,” Magny said after the fight about how the first round played out. “I just tried to not let it effect me and keep driving on.”

And keep driving on he did. In fact, Magny returned the favor in round two.

He got into a groove, using his nine-inch reach advantage by utilizing his jab and pulling Lombard into his Thai clinch, where he could land knees to the body. Lombard, however, snuck in one of his heavy hands midway through the round, but that would be his last significant offense.

Lombard dropped into Magny’s guard, intent on picking up with his ground and pound game, but Magny quickly reversed position, mounting Lombard and slapping on a triangle choke, which nearly put the lights out on the former Olympic judoka.

Lombard eventually escaped the triangle, but Magny dominated him for the remainder of the round. Magny held mount and punched Lombard over and over with only the sound of the horn to save him.

The horn couldn’t save Lombard in the final round, however, as Magny immediately began lighting him up as the round started, snapping his jab and landing jumping knees from the Thai clinch.

With Lombard on wobbly legs, Magny easily took him down and immediately moved to full mount. He locked his legs in a triangle around Lombard’s head from the mount and dropped several punches, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

It was a stunning comeback as the referee would not have been faulted for stopping the fight in the first round when Lombard was unloading on Magny. The Elevation Fight Team member dug deep to survive that heavy barrage and turned the tables, showing awe-inspiring resolve. With the victory, he became the first fighter in Lombard's 40-plus-fight career to finish the Cuban-Australian fighter.

“A win like this was amazing for me and my career,” said Magny. “A win over Hector Lombard should position me to fight top five guys and eventually for a title for years over.”
