UFC Nashville Results: Amanda Nunes Destroys Sara McMann in One

Sara McMann, the No. 4 ranked UFC women’s bantamweight, and No. 7 ranked Amanda Nunes stepped into the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 73 on Saturday night in Nashville looking to make a case for a crack at the belt currently in the iron grip of Ronda Rousey.

McMann has already failed once before against Rousey, and Nunes had her title run derailed by Cat Zingano, but with Rousey rolling over everyone not named Cris Cyborg, it’s a short road back to contention.

The road for McMann stopped in Nashville though, as this fight was all Nunes.

Nunes established herself from the opening bell, landing a sharp punch combination that rocked McMann in the first few seconds of the fight.

McMann, an Olympic silver medalist in wrestling, quickly drew on her strength, throwing punch combinations to try and set up takedowns, but Nunes’ takedown defense was solid. She stuffed every attempt that McMann sought and used her striking to take control.

Midway into the opening round, Nunes landed a three-punch combination that sent McMann to the canvas, and she immediately pounced. She took McMann’s back, softening her up with punches before flattening her out.

McMann was forced to turn to her back to try and make something happen, but Nunes remained glued to her and sunk in a rear-naked choke that made the Olympian tap out seconds later.

It was a huge victory for Nunes, who now has back-to-back victories on her resume since losing to Zingano. With Rousey likely facing Miesha Tate in her next defense, Nunes is likely only one or two fights away from a title shot, and she’s ready.

“Everybody think of me as weak on the ground, but my background is jiu-jitsu and judo. I love the striking, but I’m come from grappling,” she said after the fight. “The champion have a fight coming up, maybe I’m next… I’m ready.”
