UFC Sao Paulo Results: Gleison Tibau Scores Record-Setting Win Over Abel Trujillo

Gleison Tibau Popped for Second Potential UFC Anti-Doping Violation

Gleison Tibau entered the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 77 on Saturday night in Sao Paulo Brazil, making his 26th UFC start. That extended his record as the most prolific fighter in UFC lightweight history.

But when it comes to fighting in the Octagon, it’s not about how many fights have you fought, but what fights have you won, and Tibau was coming off of a loss to Tony Ferguson in his last fight, so needed a victory.

As much as Tibau wanted to rebound, so did Trujillo, who hadn’t fought in nearly a year prior to Saturday night. He also was coming off of a loss to Ferguson in his last fight, which was in December of 2014.

There can only be one, however, and in Sao Paulo, Tibau was the one.

He immediately took Trujillo to the mat, but the America quickly regained his feet. Tibau kept after him, however, pressuring Trujillo on the fence for a time before again putting him on the canvas.

This time, however, Tibau didn’t let him up. As Trujillo twisted and turned, trying to escape, Tibau stayed on top of him, several times switching from top mount to back mount.

Tibau eventually slipped an arm under Trujillo’s chin and sank in a rear naked choke.

While Trujillo never tapped, referee Keith Peterson stopped the fight, believing that Trujillo went unconscious, although he never checked the fighter’s arm to see if it was limp. As soon as Peterson declared the fight over, Trujillo complained, but to no avail.

Tibau was awarded his 17th UFC victory, which now ties him with Michael Bisping for third most victories in UFC history behind Georges St-Pierre (19) and Matt Hughes (18).
