Liverpool supporters will have lots of players to keep their eyes on at the European Championships this summer. There are those that represent their club already and those that might do so in future if transfer rumours are to be believed.

There are three matches on Saturday which will feature at least six men in whom the Reds supposedly hold an interest. Hungary will be captained by Dominik Szoboszlai when they face Xherdan Shaqiri’s Switzerland too.

Another member of new head coach Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad has already made a mark at Euro 2024. The problem for Scotland captain Andy Robertson is that it was far from a positive one, with the 30-year-old leading his side to a 5-1 defeat against Germany on Friday evening.

Criticism of his performance has unfortunately flowed thick and fast since the curtain came down on a very bad night for the Scots. The first to put the boot in was ITV pundit Roy Keane. “It's no good talking after the game saying 'We had a game plan'... it's rubbish! Andy Robertson, it's all just rubbish coming out,” he said.

The written media has not been any kinder. Writing in The Guardian, Nick Ames gave the Liverpool man a 5/10 rating, the joint-best for any of Scotland’s starting XI. That was a low bar to reach, though, with Ames noting that the “skipper delivered free-kick that brought consolation but was given torrid time by [Jamal] Musiala and [Florian] Wirtz before break.”

The same issue was highlighted in The Independent, which noted that “Musiala glided by the Scotland captain on a couple of occasions,” when awarding the Liverpool defender a mark of just four. Meanwhile, “Robertson did not play particularly well, in keeping with the Scottish malaise,” was the view of The Scotsman’s Mark Atkinson.

“He was caught too narrow for Germany’s opening goal when a raking cross-field ball found Germany in space on his flank,” he continued. “After that it was a case of battling, scrapping against a fierce tide.” While the assessment noted that Robertson “never stopped trying,” that’s the very least Liverpool fans have come to expect from the left-back.

The Scotland number three was awarded a 4/10 rating by 90 Min and the same low score by Goal, both of which again highlighted the issues he had with Musiala. No matter which outlet you check, the theme remains. Robertson and his teammates were uniformly poor. They will all need to be far better when Scotland takes on Switzerland on Wednesday.
