Unatego's defense dominates in 44-15 quarterfinal win over Union Springs

Feb. 23—The Unatego girls basketball team rolled to a 44-15 win over Union Springs in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class C tournament Friday at home.

The Spartans defense led the way all game long including holding Union Springs scoreless in the fourth quarter.

"Our girls played great defense tonight and executed on offense," Unatego coach Bob Zeh said via email. "Results of a great week of practice."

Lizzie Craft led all scorers with 15 points while Harly Birdsall added 10 points and Bailey McCoy and Rae Parks each netted six points in the win.

Jennifer Daum was the leading scorer for Union Springs with six points in the loss.

Fourth-seeded Unatego will take on top-seeded Watkins Glen in the semifinal round Tuesday at TC3 in Cortland.

Susquehanna Valley 37, Oneonta 27

Oneonta's offense went cold in a 37-27 loss to Susquehanna Valley in the Section IV Class B Quarterfinals Friday.

Kendall LeFever led the Yellowjackets with eight points while Selene Wellman scored seven, Hayden LeFever notched 20 rebounds and four assists to go with five points and Isabella Giacomelli grabbed seven rebounds.

Julia Clarke was the top scorer for the Sabers with nine points.

Weedsport 49, Cooperstown 36

Cooperstown fell to Weedsport 49-36 on the road Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class C tournament.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early and were unable to recover despite a second-quarter run and an evenly-matched third quarter.

Brenna Seamon had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds while Rory Nelen had 13 points and eight rebounds, Olivia Murdock grabbed 11 rebounds and Mia Kaltenbach tallied four points, three assists and four steals in the loss.

Kayla Flask and Keegan McNabb led Weedsport with 14 and 10 points, respectively, in the win.

Cooperstown finishes its season with a 15-7 record.

Schenevus 52, Richfield Springs 43

Schenevus used a 19-6 second quarter to pull away from Richfield Springs 52-43 in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class D tournament at home Friday.

Sam Barrett led the Dragons with 19 points while Amber Burton added 16 points in the win.

Issy Seamon had a game-high 23 points for Richfield Springs.

Fourth-seeded Schenevus will take on top-seeded Edmeston/Morris in the semifinal round Tuesday at SUNY Delhi while Richfield Springs ends its season with an 11-7 record.

South Kortright 44, Worcester 41

South Kortright held off Worcester 44-41 in a back-and-forth Class D quarterfinal contest at home Friday.

Addy Eckert led the Rams with 18 points in the win while Carlee Dropp also finished in double-figures with 10.

Worcester's Hailey Shalor scored a game-high 19 points while Bella Head added 11 points.

South Kortright will take on Cherry Valley-Springfield in Tuesday's semifinal game at SUNY Delhi.

Cherry Valley-Springfield advanced to the Class D sectional semifinals with a 51-40 victory over Stamford/Jefferson Friday.

Daphnee West led the Lady Patriots with 16 points while also adding nine rebounds. Morgan Huff poured in 14 points of her own.

McKenna Hoyt had a terrific performance in the loss for S/J, finishing with 31 points.

CV-S will face South Kortright in the semifinals next Tuesday at SUNY Delhi.
