Urawa Red Diamonds vs Manchester City LIVE!

Manchester City are through to the final at the 2023 Club World Cup. Pep Guardiola's side put their recent uncharacteristic Premier League struggles behind them to dominate on their first ever appearance at the global Fifa competition in Jeddah on Tuesday evening, with the European Champions League holders brushing aside their AFC equivalents in some style.

A one-sided first half which Man City monopolised failed to yield any goals until right at the end, when a Matheus Nunes cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Marius Hoibraten, who would also later go on to deflect Bernardo Silva's hopeful follow-up shot in for City's third. Mateo Kovacic raced through to slam home between those two goals, with City not missing the injured Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku.

Copa Libertadores holders Fluminense now await in Friday night's South America vs Europe final, with the Brazilian giants having seen off Al Ahly, who will now play Urawa in the third-place play-off. Follow Urawa Red Diamonds vs Man City reaction at the Club World Cup live below!

By the way, it is now being reported that City's squad list for the final will have to be the same as the semi-final.

So that's why Haaland, De Bruyne and Doku won't be able to play on Friday.

Full-time

An easy night's work for City, who rediscover their mojo and cruise into the final on their first ever Club World Cup appearance.

It will be Europe vs South America and Champions League holders vs Copa Libertadores winners in the showpiece fixture at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on Friday night.

For Urawa, a third-place play-off against African champions Al Ahly at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City earlier on the same day.

89 mins: Mere shooting practice for City now as Kovacic goes close, so too Gomez after a short corner routine.

Three added minutes signalled for Urawa to endure.

84 mins: Nunes joins Akanji in the book for a trip before some brave goalkeeping from Nishikawa at the feet of Alvarez denies City a late fourth goal.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

80 mins: What a challenge from Ederson on Nakajima to deny the Urawa substitute a consolation goal inside the final 10 minutes.

A heavy first touch just allowed the Brazilian to make that excellent tackle.

78 mins: Stones and Rodri now make way for City as Guardiola sends on Gomez and Phillips for the final 10 minutes or so.

Urawa, who look beaten and deflated, replace captain Iwao with Shibato.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:38 , George Flood

76 mins: 20-year-old Norwegian winger Bobb is proving a real menace for Urawa to cope with off the bench.

Now he weaves through and tees up Alvarez, whose close-range shot is kept out by the body of Nishikawa.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:36 , George Flood

73 mins: Walker takes a tumble for City and looks hurt, but he's okay to continue.

Kovacic now off target as hungry City look to add further to their commanding lead, taking out some frustration after a rare wobbly few weeks in the Premier League.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:30 , George Flood

68 mins: To bring you up to date with the Urawa changes, Ogiwara, Schalk, Nakajima and Linssen have replaced Ito, Okubo, Koizumi and Kante.

Bobb goes close for City with a vicious low effort that flies narrowly wide.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:29 , George Flood

66 mins: A first real chance of the night for Urawa after City are caught trying to play out from the back, but substitute Linssen can't pick out a team-mate and Stones scrambles clear.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:28 , George Flood

65 mins: Gvardiol and Alvarez are both on for City now, along with young Oscar Bobb.

A triple change from Guardiola, who takes off Akanji, Foden and Silva with this game firmly in the bag.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City

19:25 , George Flood

64 mins: Grealish has to score City's fourth with Urawa now all at sea, but he takes too long to pull the trigger and the Japanese side eventually crowd him out inside the box.

GOAL! Urawa Red Diamonds 0-3 Manchester City | Bernardo Silva 59'

19:20 , George Flood

59 mins: City are absolutely sailing through to the Club World Cup final!

Nunes, after missing that sitter, has a curling strike beaten away by Nishikawa, but Silva's follow-up is deflected into the bottom corner by the unfortunate Hoibraten.

This is a real night to forget for the Norwegian defender, who also scored that own goal on the stroke of half-time.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-2 Manchester City

19:18 , George Flood

56 mins: It really should be 3-0 to City, but Nunes somehow steers his free header from Grealish's cross wide from mere yards out.

Terrible miss, but it shouldn't matter too much. Changes coming now from Urawa.

GOAL! Urawa Red Diamonds 0-2 Manchester City | Mateo Kovacic 52'

19:13 , George Flood

52 mins: City double their advantage early in the second half!

One fine pass cuts Urawa apart and Kovacic bursts through on goal, leaving right-back Sekine trailing in his wake as he fires powerfully beyond Nishikawa.

City surely now with one foot firmly planted in Friday's Club World Cup final against Fluminense.

46 mins: Some early work for Ederson in this second half as Urawa look to improve upon their woeful attacking output.

But City are soon back in control.

Back underway in Jeddah, with no changes from either manager just yet.

It is being reported, by the way, that the injured trio of Haaland, De Bruyne and Doku were all removed from City's Club World Cup roster before this game - meaning they would not be able to play against Fluminense in Friday's final, if City get that far.

More to come on that after the game and from Pep Guardiola, I'm sure.

Half-time

GOAL! Urawa Red Diamonds 0-1 Manchester City | Marius Hoibraten OG 46'

18:48 , George Flood

46 mins: The deadlock is finally broken in first-half stoppage time!

Hoibraten doesn't have his bearings at all and turns Nunes' dangerous low cross from the right into his own net on the slide.

Horrible defending, but dominant City deserve the lead.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:46 , George Flood

44 mins: Rodri looks to set Grealish away down the left channel, but Sekine defends diligently and an attempted lift over the right-back succeeds only in gifting Urawa a pressure-relieving goal kick.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:43 , George Flood

41 mins: Ake is trying to will on City here before the interval.

Kovacic gets involved in some nice combination play and is almost in on goal, but denied by a well-timed sliding challenge from Haaland's compatriot Hoibraten.

City are then wrongly denied the chance to add to their mounting corner tally.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:40 , George Flood

38 mins: A smile and a wave from Haaland, who is with the City squad tonight along with De Bruyne and Doku, as his face flashes onto the big screen for the biggest cheer of the night so far.

Nishikawa makes another comfortable save and De Bruyne is also cheered to the rafters.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:37 , George Flood

36 mins: Dominant City end up with another corner and Foden eventually stings the palms of Nishikawa with a drive that is parried behind.

The Urawa goalkeeper cleans up from the resulting corner.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:34 , George Flood

33 mins: Silva cuts inside and sees a shot blocked before Rodri's cross intended for Stones is plucked out of the air with confidence by Nishikawa.

Just the 80 per cent possession for City so far in Jeddah!

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:32 , George Flood

30 mins: This is an attack versus defence training match at the moment, with Urawa's players all behind the ball and everyone but Akanji very advanced for City.

The Premier League champions do get through there, but Nunes' strike from a difficult angle is tipped over well by Nishikawa.

Nunes and Kovacic had tried to combine on the edge of the box moments before - those breaks forward from midfield will be important throughout this game you feel.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:30 , George Flood

28 mins: You have to commend Urawa for their defensive discipline so far here - there are so many bodies inside that box.

Silva and Foden combine with the latter's shot blocked, with the England man then showing dazzling feet to try and pull of a nutmeg.

Hoibraten's poor clearance is chested down and hit quickly by Rodri, who gets a slight deflection - debatable - and a corner.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:28 , George Flood

26 mins: Still nothing doing for City as Grealish tries to collect a deep cross from Walker and is flagged offside.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:25 , George Flood

25 mins: Akanji hauls back Yasui and rightly receives the first booking of the evening for his troubles.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:24 , George Flood

22 mins: A solid sliding challenge from Urawa captain Iwao on Nunes gives City a corner over on the right-hand side.

Nunes' delivery is initially repelled and City rework the attack through Silva, Foden and Grealish, though they cannot break down 11 men behind the ball and eventually have to go all the way back to the halfway line.

City need some ideas and ingenuity here - things they don't usually lack in abundance.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:21 , George Flood

21 mins: More tidy City build-up play comes to nothing as a stray pass towards Stones sails harmlessly out of play for a goal kick.

So far, so good for Urawa through 20 minutes. City remain notably off the pace.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:20 , George Flood

19 mins: You get the feeling that the Grealish and Silva combination will be vital for City getting a result tonight.

A great run from the Portuguese is almost rewarded by City's No10, but Nishikawa bravely claims the cross.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:17 , George Flood

15 mins: Grealish and Silva link up again as the England playmaker cuts inside off that left flank with City looking for more width to get round the stubborn Urawa low block.

He eventually find Silva, who clips over harmlessly from the edge of the box.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:15 , George Flood

14 mins: Nice interplay between Grealish and Silva inside a crowded Urawa box, but the former's shot is well blocked by Sekine.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:13 , George Flood

12 mins: This is dour fare in a flat atmosphere just at the moment, with City repeatedly struggling to pierce through that Urawa low block.

The AFC Champions League holders lack creativity and end product when they do get on the ball, meanwhile.

[object Object] (REUTERS)
[object Object] (REUTERS)

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:12 , George Flood

10 mins: A couple of iffy moments for City at the back so far, with Ederson just about clearing up ahead of Kante.

A couple of early back-passes have been sold short as well. Guardiola will demand better.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:10 , George Flood

8 mins: A little burst of pace from Grealish there gets the crowd on their feet before Urawa are quickly back into their disciplined low block and City probe patiently, looking for an early opportunity.

Rodri lets fly from miles out, but his low effort goes well wide of Nishikawa's right-hand post.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:07 , George Flood

5 mins: It looks like Bernardo Silva is playing more as the false nine so far, with Foden on the right and Grealish off the left.

No real attacking intent shown by City so far as Kovacic runs from midfield and looks to put pressure on goalkeeper Nishikawa.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:04 , George Flood

3 mins: That determined and energetic high press does yield early results as sloppy City are caught in possession at the back, but Walker stands tall to repel Okubo's cross from the right.

A positive start from the Japanese side.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-0 Manchester City

18:03 , George Flood

2 mins: A notably low-key start to the game.

Both sides are seeing plenty of the ball, with Urawa pressing high and trying to force City into mistakes as they look to play out from the back.

Guardiola: Man City can 'close circle' by winning Club World Cup

17:41 , George Flood

Despite his complaints about the fixture list, Pep Guardiola yesterday expressed his pride at Manchester City competing at the Club World Cup for the first time.

Having finally ended that Champions League hoodoo earlier this year, City are now aiming to "close a little circle" with that final major honour to elude them.

"It's a pleasure to be here, it's an honour," said Guardiola.

"It's the first time Man City are here. That shows how difficult it is. We won't take it for granted. We take it as a privilege.

"Of course we want to win it. It is a trophy we don't have. We want to close a little circle, that we have won all the trophies we could do. This is the last one."

Subs: Niekawa, Yoshida, Sakai, Iwanami, Ogiwara, Ohata, Panya, Shibato, Koroki, Linssen, Schalk, Nakajima

Urawa unchanged from win over Leon

17:20 , George Flood

Urawa are unchanged from their second-round win over Leon at this tournament.

Right-back Takahiro Sekine, left-back Takahiro Akimoto and winger Tomoaki Okubo have all been passed fit, while Polish boss Maciej Skorza has resisted the urge to go with Friday's match-winner Alex Schalk from the off.

And here's how Urawa Red Diamonds line up in Jeddah tonight...

Four Man City changes with Foden as false nine

17:15 , George Flood

So no Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne or Jeremy Doku for City still, as expected.

Still a really strong City team selected though, with Phil Foden looking set to play as a false nine supported by Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva with Julian Alvarez only on the bench.

I think that's four changes from Pep Guardiola in total to the team held to a disappointing late home draw by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, with John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic replacing Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Rico Lewis and Alvarez.

The likes of Stefan Ortega, Sergio Gomez and Kalvin Phillips might all have expected to play tonight, but instead they join youngsters such as Oscar Bobb, Max Alleyne, Mahamadou Susoho and Micah Hamilton among the substitutes.

Bernardo Silva laments 'crazy' schedule

16:35 , George Flood

City playmaker Bernardo Silva echoed the thoughts of his manager on the relentless schedule facing modern players, calling it "crazy" and warning of a decrease in quality and intensity as well as heightened injury risk.

"We were not consulted but we try to do our jobs, to represent our clubs the best possible way, and the people that pay our salaries and the fans that support us," Silva said.

"The reality is the amount of games we have nowadays, and even more with the new competitions, if you look at it, it is a bit crazy because of the rest that players get and the risk of injury is up quite a lot.

"At the end we cannot complain because we earn a lot of money but in my opinion, for the people that love the game, and are entertained by the game, if we have this many games for so long, at the end the games will lose the energy and the intensity."

Pep Guardiola expresses schedule concern

16:22 , George Flood

Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration with the increasingly hectic schedules in modern football during his pre-match press conference yesterday, with Fifa set to expand the Club World Cup to 32 teams and play it in the summer from 2025.

City - along with Chelsea - will both play at the new inaugural tournament in the United States in 2025, though Liverpool and Manchester United missed out while Arsenal will need to win this season's Champions League in order to book their place.

"I am not against the new competitions. I am against the lack of time to recover from year to year," Guardiola said.

"This is what I am complaining (about) all the time. For me it doesn't matter to play every three days, six days, seven days. It is OK.

"But it is really tough to finish the season and then in three weeks restart again and go to Asia, to be financially stable, or the States.

"That is really, really tough, for ourselves and especially for the players. For myself, things should change. This is my point.

"But how do you change when (after) you finish the season, you go to the States to play another competition? This is the problem."

Having finally ended their long wait for maiden Champions League glory under Pep Guardiola with that narrow, Rodri-inspired 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul earlier this year, Manchester City are competing at the Club World Cup for the very first time in 2023.

However, this is not Urawa's first dance, with the three-time AFC Champions League winners and five-time Japanese champions having lost to AC Milan in the 2007 semi-finals on home soil in Yokohama.

They also lost to Al-Jazira in the second round in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

Urawa Red Diamonds vs Man City prediction

Manchester City should stroll to victory in this semi-final match, despite facing the three-time AFC Champions League winners.

Even with the expected raft of changes, given possible jet lag and level of opponents, City should be out of sight by half-time.

City's opponents could be forced into some changes tonight following their hard-fought 1-0 second-round victory over Concacaf Champions Cup winners Leon of Mexico on Friday in which Dutch substitute and former Ross County star Alex Schalk netted a 78th-minute winner.

Right-back Takahiro Sekine, left-back Takahiro Akimoto and winger Tomoaki Okubo were all forced off in that game at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City and it remains to be seen if any will be fit here.

Hiroki Sakai and Takuya Ogiwara could both come in, along with match-winner Schalk.

Man City team news

15:42 , George Flood

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne have both made the trip out to the Middle East, though the former was not involved in training on Monday and remains a huge doubt tonight having missed the last three City games with a nagging foot issue.

It was a surprise to see De Bruyne join in as he ramps up his recovery from surgery on a serious hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since the opening night of the season.

However, it seems very unlikely that he will play in either of City's games in Saudi Arabia this week, while De Bruyne's home in Belgium was reportedly burgled over the weekend.

Jeremy Doku is also on the trip but, like Haaland, did not train on Monday and surely won't be involved tonight due to an ongoing muscle problem.
