The US Open is set to again provide the top golfers in the world with one of the sport’s toughest tests as the event returns to Pinehurst in North Carolina.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer tamed this course a decade ago to take his second major triumph, but only two other men made it through the weekend under par in an illustration of how difficult a tournament this can be.

Organisers may look to ratchet up the challenge after a free-scoring PGA Championship last month was won by maiden major champion Xander Schauffele.

Scottie Scheffler will be looking for a rather smoother participation than he endured in Valhalla, while Rory McIlroy will look to end his drought after finishing as runner-up to Wyndham Clark last year.
