Video: Dog trainer gets her pooches to pick her dates after being dumped following her admission that she loved her dogs more than her partner

A dog trainer has got her pooches to pick her dates after admitting at a family dinner that she loved her pets more than her partner – causing the pair to part.

The proud “adoptive parent” of two rescued Staffordshire bull terrier crosses, Kerryann Dobbs, 22, admits that when it came to choosing between her partner of 18 months and her dog, her canine companion came first.

Already devoted to Chace, a 22-month-old Staffie she rescued in September 2019, she split up with her girlfriend on the day in April 2020 that she adopted her second pup, Stormy, now 15 months.

Kerryann, of Govan, Glasgow, said: “We broke up the day I picked Stormy up.

“Her mum had asked me when we were all having dinner if I loved my dogs more than my partner and I said I did – but it was a different kind of love.

“My Staffies are like my kids, so they always come first.”

She added: “There were other reasons we split, but it definitely added to the break up.

“She didn’t want me to get another dog, but I went ahead and got Stormy anyway.”

To avoid future heartbreak, Kerryann, who is bi-sexual, now lets her dogs decide who she dates – even dumping a man who disagreed over the best breeds.

“My life is just dogs, dogs, dogs. So if you don’t like dogs it’s a no from me,” she said.

“Chace and Stormy had a really rough start in life, so now they’re an important part of every decision I make.”

In a sorry state when she took him in, according to Kerryann, Chace was not being kept in the best conditions by the breeder.

“He was covered in dirt and in an awful state,” she said.

“Luckily, he was fine, though, and best of all he was the most loving puppy. We had an instant connection.”

Throwing herself into helping Chace recover from his turbulent start in life, Kerryann devoted herself to caring for her new family member.

“Within the first nine months of owning Chace he was attacked twice by other dogs,” she said.

“He’s so loving, he didn’t even bite back. Instead, he jumped into my arms when two German Shepherds attacked him.

“I took the brunt of it and was left with cuts and bruises, but I’d do it again to keep him safe.”

She added: “The second time a Staffie attacked him on our nightly walk. The dog had wandered out of a neighbouring garden and just went for him. He didn’t bite back once, he’s really such a softie.”

Despite their dramas, Chace settled in well and Kerryann showered him with love and affection.

“I’m a dog trainer, so I knew I had to make Chace feel safe and secure,” she said.

She added: “It was a tough time for him, but we pulled through it together.

“And, when the breeder said he was having another litter just months later, I adopted Stormy.”

Totally devoted to her new pooches, Kerryann was happier than ever, even though her partner called time on their romance when she picked her new puppy up.

“I’d been with my partner for 18 months,” she said.

“But I wasn’t spending a lot of time with her, because of Chace and I think it caused difficulties between us.

“Then, when I admitted in front of her mum and everyone at the dinner table that I loved my dog more than her, I think the cracks really started to show.”

She added: “I wasn’t happy when she left, but I have Chace and Stormy and they mean everything to me.”

Making sure she only ends up with other dog lovers, she now puts her pets centre stage whenever she dates someone new.

“I introduce the dogs right away,” she laughed.

She added: “I put them all over my profile pictures when I’m online dating. The first thing I ask if I match with someone is whether they have a dog. If they aren’t dog people, I will un-match them.

“I even ditched a guy because he told me he preferred spaniels to Staffies.

“I was furious, as he was insulting my dogs by saying they weren’t a nice breed.”

She even lets her dogs gatecrash on first dates,

“It’s really important that anyone I date has a connection with my dogs,” she said.

“I will usually introduce them on the first date. They’re really excitable and love people, so it’s a real test for that person to see how they react to them, plus they need to be desensitised to them before they step in our home.”

She added: “I’m open to finding love, but the dogs have to be included.”

Happily single for now, Kerryann is hoping her next big date could be at an awards ceremony, after she nominated Chace for the Naturo SuperDog Award, for surviving the two vicious attacks when she first got him.

“He’s been through so much,” she said.

She added: “I really think he’s a superdog, because he’s so brave. Despite being attacked and having such a hard start, he’s such a happy dog. People call him cheesy Chace because he’s so happy.

“Hopefully, my dogs will help me to make a good choice next time I date.

“But I’m enjoying being single, for now.”

She added: “I’ve got two dogs and my 8 year old cat Tootsie who share my bed every night, so I’m not sure there’s much room for anyone else anyway!”
