Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta thinks Indian skipper Virat Kohli is trying to get back in the process of scoring runs rather than going for the final results.

Kohli found his rhythm on Friday as he joined Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease and played his natural game with the bat, avoiding playing away from the bodyline. On the morning of Day 4, Kohli reached his first 50-plus score in the series.

However, Kohli did not last long at the crease after getting past his fifty as the Indian skipper once again nicked to Joe Root in the slip region off Ollie Robinson’s bowling.

But Dasgupta felt that Kohli played in a similar manner of his 2018 tour to England when he scored 593 runs at an average of 59.30 and scored three hundreds in that series.

“It looked like 2018 Virat Kohli, isn’t it? Leaving those deliveries, being more patient and watchful outside that off-stump. Michael (Vaughan) mentioned before about him being anxious.

“I think it’s normal when somebody of his stature hasn’t really scored a hundred in a while. He hasn’t scored those big runs,” Dasgupta said on BCC Test Match Special podcast.

“He is looking for it. But I think, maybe in this innings, he is trying to go back to the process and focusing on the process rather than the end result of getting a big run. That’s what was successful for him in 2018, he added.

Virat Kohli’s hunt for 71st international hundred continues

It has been nearly two years that Virat Kohli has not scored a century in international cricket, with 70 centuries across all formats he is just third in the list of most international hundreds by a batsman behind Ricky Ponting (71) and Sachin Tendulkar (100).
