Liverpool could be left sweating over the future of Virgil van Dijk this summer. The stalwart is out of contract next year and Saudi Pro League clubs have reportedly signalled the Dutchman as a primary target.

Van Dijk has been one of the Premier League’s most assured and leading centre backs, but the Reds could be tempted into parting with the Dutchman. Van Dijk sees his current Liverpool contract expire in June 2025 and talks on a renewal have stalled.

Joining the Reds in 2018 for a then-world record £75million fee for a defender, he has won all there is to win with Liverpool at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s trophy-laden side. But he could be about to leave all that behind for a new challenge.

Van Dijk previously answered questions about his future shortly after Klopp announced his decision to resign. “That is correct – good maths,” he replied when reminded about his contract expiring in 2025. “Listen, I don’t know. The club will have a big job on their hands, that is well known.

“To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff is leaving, and there are so many things that will change. So the club has a big job on its hands and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation, I can’t say now.”

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Saudi Pro League clubs have been left on high alert with the division keen to continue its lavish spending this summer. Van Dijk’s reputation would signal a massive coup for the league.

Al-Nassr’s general director is said to have met with Van Dijk’s representatives last week and a lucrative contract has been offered to tempt the Dutchman to Saudi Arabia. A deal that would make the 32-year-old the world’s best-paid defender.

The Public Investment Fund is said to be preparing to meet his entourage to explore the negotiation room on his demands ahead of a possible transfer in the coming weeks.

Set to replace ex-Man City star?

The interest from Al-Nassr could see Van Dijk become the Riyadh club’s top target to replace Aymeric Laporte. The former Manchester City defender previously hit out at his surroundings following his move and looks set to head for the exit door just a year since arriving.

Al-Nassr could look to bring in Van Dijk to bolster the defence of the side that has Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in attack. The Dutchman is under consideration alongside PSG centre-back Marquinhos, who agreed personal terms last summer only for the Ligue 1 champions to reject the transfer offers.

However, the Liverpool Echo reported that Liverpool have denied any contact has been made by Al-Nassr over a bid for the captain. Van Dijk’s future is just one concern that incoming boss Arne Slot has to manage with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold both out of contract next summer.
