Philippe Gilbert won stage 17 at the Vuelta a España after the Deceuninck-Quick Step rider ambushed Sam Bennett in the finishing straight of the 219.6km run from Aranda de Duero to Guadalajara on Wednesday.

After crosswinds had caused huge splits in the peloton, Gilbert and his Deceuninck-Quick Step team-mates controlled the stage which also had potentially huge implications on the general classification.

With race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) having missed the decisive split – along with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Miguel Ángel López (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) – Nairo Quintana (Movistar) made huge gains climbing to second overall after finishing 5min 29sec ahead of the quartet.

It was also a good day for Gilbert's team-mate James Knox, the 23 year-old Briton, who broke into the top 10 in only the second grand tour of his career.

The Vuelta continues on Thursday with the 177.5km stage from Comunidad de Madrid. Colmenar Viejo to Becerril de la Sierra and concludes in Madrid on Sunday.
