Waldemar Anton is the latest name being linked with a move to Liverpool as the Arne Slot era gets underway at Anfield.

According to German outlet Bild, the Reds are tracking the Stuttgart defender, who is currently with the Germany squad at this summer’s Euro 2024. He didn’t get any minutes against Scotland on Friday, but he could yet feature in the tournament.

The report claims that an offer of around $24.1m (£19m/€22.6m) will be enough to activate the 27-year-old’s release clause. Anton only signed a new contract back in January, which will keep him at Stuttgart until 2027.

Nevertheless, Liverpool is likely to be on the hunt for a new defender this summer. With Joel Matip having departed, Ibrahima Konate’s injury problems and Virgil van Dijk having just one year remaining on his contract, a fresh face at the back will almost certainly be a priority for Slot and new sporting director Richard Hughes.

Whether Anton will be that player remains to be seen. When speaking back in December, before he signed his new deal, the former Hannover man didn’t seem to show much interest in a transfer.

“I am very happy to be at VfB and to feel the trust,” he told Kicker amid links to the Premier League. “As long as my family and I are happy, it will be hard to leave VfB.”

Liverpool.com says: It’s interesting that Anton cites his family as a reason to stay at Stuttgart. He has only played for two clubs during his professional career so far, having moved to his current side from Hannover in 2020.

That does give Liverpool an indication of how to win Anton’s heart should the Reds want to pursue his signing. The fans would certainly do their best to not only make the defender feel welcome at Anfield, but also his family.

We’ve seen over the past few years how other players’ wives and girlfriends have become as popular as the players themselves. In fact, Jurgen Klopp’s wife Ulla became something of a cult hero during their time on Merseyside.

Anton and his family would hopefully fit in well at Liverpool. We’ll have to wait and see whether anything comes of the speculation.
