The England fans at Headingley enjoyed giving a send-off to Virat Kohli by singing ‘cheerio’ as the dejected batsman headed back to the pavilion. Kohli was dismissed by pacer James Anderson during the 11th over of India’s first innings of the ongoing third Test.

Having walked in early for the first time this series, Kohli had a lot of pressure on his shoulders. He was due a big knock but it wasn’t to be in the first innings. Anderson got him caught by Jos Buttler as India’s top-order collapsed spectacularly.

Kohli only managed to score 7 off 17 balls during his short stay at the crease. As he was walking back, a delighted English crowd close to the pavilion sang ‘Cheerio’, a video of which was shared by The Barmy Army on its Twitter page with the caption: “Cheerio Virat. Jimmy has 3 in the first hour. #ENGvIND.

Virat Kohli’s decision to bat first backfires stupendously

Having won the toss for the first time in eight Tests in England, Virat Kohli made the decision to bat first. It looked like the wrong call almost immediately, as there was a considerable amount of swing on offer under cloudy skies.

One of the best at using overhead conditions, James Anderson, exploited his skills and the complacency shown by the Indian batsmen to capitalize. Within the first hour, he had India down to 21/3, bowling impeccable line and lengths throughout his eight-over spell.

Robinson joined in when he dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant on either side of the lunch break, leaving India gasping for air at 58/5. The decision to bat first was questioned by Stuart Broad, who believes the call was a ‘brave’ one.

Huge hour for England! 3 big wickets. Brave call from India to bat first, it’s the best Day 1 ground to bowl at in the country IMO. Pitch will get better & better. Won’t be much in it for the seamers from Day 3 onwards- enough in it now!” he wrote on Twitter.

Rohit Sharma continued to fight at the other end, and in his company was premier all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The duo needs to rebuild the innings if India is to stay in the game.
