Joe Root’s splendid century on Day 2 of the Headingley Test came to an end with a superb ball from India pacer Jasprit Bumrah. After troubling the Indian bowlers for the most part of the day, the England skipper made a rare miss towards the end of the day, but not before helping his side take a lead in excess of 300.

It was one of the quicker centuries from Joe Root, coming at a strike rate of 73, which needed to be stopped by a brilliant delivery from the Indian spearhead.

In his 25th over, after being wicketless despite bowling well throughout the innings, Bumrah fired one in on length again, with a perfect seam presentation. Joe Root, riding on his confidence, lured himself into the straight drive, but couldn’t quite get his front foot as much forward as he should have to drive it neatly.

The ball, landing on the seam, already going in with Bumrah’s angle, jagged further back in while staying low. Joe Root, with his trigger movement, came across, but realized the ball to move into his bat-pad gap and crash into the off-stump, and gave Bumrah his first prize of the day.

There was no celebration from the bowler, knowing that Joe Root had batted India out of the game; the batsman was clearly unhappy with his dismissal. Nonetheless, the English captain departed to a standing ovation from his home crowd.

With a lead of 345 runs and still 2 wickets in hand, it would be fair to say that England have batted India out of the game, and it would take a miraculous effort from Indian batsmen and bowlers to win or even draw this match from here. Apart from Joe Root’s ton, England’s top three batsmen – Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, and Dawid Malan – recorded fifties to provide a base for their captain to utilize. And he did.
