Indian pacer Mohammad Shami produced a beautiful delivery to get rid of England opener Rory Burns at the start of play on the second day of the Headingley Test between England and India. Burns looked settled at the crease until he was caught off-guard by a Shami inswinger.

Entering the second day of the Test, India needed quick breakthroughs in order to stay in the game. Burns and his partner, Haseeb Hameed, looked comfortable out in the middle until a moment of magic broke the duo’s century stand.

Shami, who has looked the most dangerous out of all the Indian bowlers so far, got one delivery to jag back in off a good length. Burns was looking to play it well outside the crease but didn’t account for the inward movement. He pressed forward to drive only to see the ball sneak past the gap between his bat and pad.

It was a perfect dismissal from the coaching manual as the ball hit the top of the off-stump, and Shami was overjoyed with his peach of a delivery. India finally had something to celebrate in what has been a gloomy match for them so far, already in a losing position after a terrible outing on Day 1.

Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah stay disciplined as England watchful on Day 2’s first session

Coming into the day’s play, India had to make sure England doesn’t run away with the lead. They came in with a set plan to bowl tight lines, and stuck to it throughout the first hour. Until drinks, 13 overs were bowled and India had conceded just 21 runs while grabbing Burns’ wicket.

Although senior pacer Ishant Sharma was a bit wayward with his line, the other two, Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, consistently bowled in the channel outside off. The scoring became tough and the result was a slight lapse in concentration from Burns, who succumbed after making 61 off 152 balls.

The lead continues to grow but at a slower rate, and every run from here on will add pressure on the Indian team. England is likely planning to make sure they have to bat just once by putting a mammoth total on the board.
