Jurgen Klopp stormed out of a post-match interview following Liverpool’s dramatic 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final defeat by Manchester United. The Liverpool manager appeared to take exception to a question about his team’s intensity.

Klopp, whose hopes of a quadruple in his final season on Merseyside ended with the extra-time defeat at Old Trafford, explained in his post-match press conference that he had to respect the result given the way United risked the game and scored a 121st-minute winner from Amad Diallo.

But that graciousness ran out in a separate interview with Nordic channel V Sport, which is owned by parent company Viaplay.

Klopp was asked after the match: “Normally, intensity is the name of your game, so how come it became so difficult in extra-time?”

In response, Klopp bristled: “That’s a bit of a dumb question, I have to say, if you see us often. If you never see us then you can ask ‘how can they have more resources?’.

“We played I don’t know how many games recently, I don’t know how many games United exactly have played. That’s sport. I’m really disappointed by that question, but you thought the opposite so that’s good.”

Looking visibly irked, Klopp then ended the discussion when the interviewer moved on to a different topic, rather than acknowledge the German’s fury.

Cutting off the presenter, Klopp said: “Oh, you don’t think that? Ah, come on, you’re obviously not in good shape and I have no words for you.”

As he walked away, the coverage cut back to a shocked TV studio with pundits lost for words.

Speaking immediately after the defeat, Klopp added on ITV: “After 2-1 up we had so many chances where we have to kill the game off and the rest is already history.

“We are nearly there in normal time, nearly there in extra-time and we lost the game. That’s all right, I cannot ask the boys for more.

“We’ve had a much more intense season so far, I think everyone knows that, we just have to count the games, and today it was hard because United have quality, took a lot of risks. I absolutely respect that.

“Congratulations to United for going to the semi-final. We have a game less, or two games less, who knows, and now we try to use that in the next few weeks.”

Klopp – whose side were playing their sixth game in 19 days – also said he could not understand why the Football Association prohibit the use of a sixth substitute in extra-time.

“I have no clue why the FA make it so you cannot change a sixth player in extra-time,” he said. “I was told before the game but I forgot. All other competitions have six but the FA thought ‘we must make it a little bit harder’. I have asked FA who said you can only use five but didn’t explain why.”
