Watch: Is this one of the luckiest penalties ever scored?


What guarantees a successful penalty? As England fans will attest, the question may not have a simple answer.

Is it hours of practice? Or is it all just sheer dumb luck?

A youngster in Mexico has made a strong claim for the latter.

Diego Campillo was taking the first penalty for Chivas’ under-17s in a shootout against Lobos BUAP.

Indeed, Lobos were already 1-0 up, having fired first.

So Campillo must have feared the consequences when his rocket of a penalty slammed the top of the crossbar and seemingly ricocheted into space.

Only, it didn’t.

The ball bounced almost straight down onto the goal line and into the back of the net.

“Increible,” was all the Mexican commentator could say – and perhaps all anybody could say.
