On Day 3 of the Headingley Test against England, during India‘s second innings, Rohit Sharma hit a brilliant uppercut six which drew plaudits from the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar, who were in the commentary box at the time.

Rohit Sharma had been dismissed thrice already in the series pulling against short-ball, despite the pull shot being his renowned strength. On the third ball of the 16th over, seeing the Indian opener becoming an immovable force, Ollie Robinson decided to test Rohit’s patience against the bouncer.

While Robinson may have the height, his pace, of around 130 kmph, wasn’t going to trouble Rohit Sharma. The pacer didn’t direct his bouncer well either as it was well outside off. The right-hander was quick to spot the length and reached out for the ball.

Knowing that there was no third man, Rohit Sharma just needed to take it over the slips – even with both feet up in the air, he timed it so well that the ball sailed over the third man boundary for the maximum.

The commentary panel of Manjrekar and Gavaskar were elated to see Rohit Sharma’s attacking instincts on the day when he has been defensive throughout. But, that the ball went for a six also astonished them.

“That’s the Rohit Sharma we know,” said Manjrekar.

“Yes, that’s the white-ball Rohit Sharma. Did it quite deliberately, jumped up with the bounce and it was a safe shot,” added Gavaskar.

This was his 62nd Test six, which takes him ahead of Kapil Dev (61) and behind only Sachin Tendulkar (69), MS Dhoni (78), and Virender Sehwag (90) in the tally for most sixes by Indians in Test cricket.

A couple of overs after that maximum from Sharma, his opening partner, KL Rahul, lost his wicket at the stroke of lunch – with Jonny Bairstow taking a stunning one-handed catch at second slip.

India will start the second session trailing by 320 runs and 9 wickets in hand, They had earlier bowled England out for 432.
