Cenk Tosun fired a stoppage-time winner as Turkey reached Euro 2024’s last 16 after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against 10-man Czech Republic.

The Czechs had midfielder Antonin Barak controversially sent off midway through the first half in Hamburg, but fought back through Tomas Soucek’s equaliser after Hakan Calhanoglu had given Turkey the lead.

But former Everton striker Tosun, a second-half substitute, eased Turkish nerves with the winner in added time to secure second place and a meeting with Austria in the first knockout stage.

It was cruel on the Czechs, who pushed Turkey all the way in a gripping encounter despite Barak’s harsh dismissal.

The Fiorentina midfielder was sent off for his second yellow card in nine minutes after being deemed to have made an over-the-top tackle by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs.

Barak’s dismissal was a huge blow, but although Turkey went on to dominate first-half possession they failed to have a shot on target before the break.

The disciplined Czechs defended resolutely and carved out the best chance on the break when flying wing-back David Jurasek’s angled effort was brilliantly saved by Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok.

But Turkey struck six minutes after the restart. Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek saved brilliantly to deny Kenan Yildiz, but moments later Calhanoglu fired home from inside the area.

The 10 men hit back in the 66th minute through skipper Soucek, who turned the ball home from close range after Samet Akaydin had blocked Tomas Chory’s effort on the goal-line.

VAR made a lengthy check as Chory appeared to impede Gunok, but the goal stood and the rejuvenated Czechs went in hunt of a second goal which would have taken them through, only to be undone by Tosun in the fourth minute of added time.

Chory was sent off after the final whistle as players from both sides clashed.

In the interest of accuracy...

...it was Tomas Chory who sent off for the Czechs after the final whistle. You can understand their frustration to an extent...the game was never the same after the Barak sending off in the first half.

What’s next...

So Turkey are into the last-16, along with Portugal and Georgia from Group F. They will face Austria on Tuesday night.

Feisty scenes here. A red card is brandished, it might have gone to Soucek. An unsavoury end to an exciting match.

GOAL – Turkey

Cenk Tosun! It was coming as you felt the Czechs had completely run out of petrol. Tosun picks up the ball on the left edge of the box. He feints once to give himself a little bit of space and smashes the ball into the far corner.

Turkey are into the last-16.

09:52 PM BST

90+2 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

The Czechs look dead on their feet here. They can’t get enough players up the pitch to support the forward line when they do get the ball forward.

09:50 PM BST

90 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Krejci is booked for a wild challenge and completely unneeded challenge. He had no chance to win the ball off Yilmaz but swiped him from behind. A good chance for Turkey to soak up a few extra seconds.

Six minutes added on.

09:48 PM BST

88 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Expect plenty of stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes here.

09:46 PM BST

87 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Yokuşlu has a decent chance to test the keeper from the edge of the area but his sliced shot is far more wild than the one Calhanoglu produced for the Turkey goal, and flies over the bar.

09:44 PM BST

84 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Turkey try to take the sting out of the game by holding a bit of possession. The funny thing about watching them though is how unnatural that looks. Every players’ default setting is to attack in a direct fashion. England, take note perhaps?

09:40 PM BST

80 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

The Czechs are knocking on the door. Every ball into the box is asking real questions of Turkey, who are hardly known for their defensive rigidity. Jurasek replaces Jurasek…no, not a typo.

09:38 PM BST

78 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

The Czechs have a chance to get a cross in from a corner but it’s poor from Coufal and easy for Gunok to deal with. Those are the sorts of opportunities the Czechs need to make the most of.

09:35 PM BST

75 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Plenty of space for Turkey now on the break but you feel this is what the Czechs want. They need this game to get stretched to give them more goes at an exposed Turkey defence.

15 minutes to go in Hamburg.

09:33 PM BST

72 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

The Czech get away with one. Yilmaz finds a perfectly weighted pass right into the stride of Yildiz, who turns Coufal all ends up. All he has to do is beat the keeper but the Czechs scramble well and the danger is averted.

09:29 PM BST

69 mins: Czech Republic 1 Turkey 1

Well hasn’t this got interesting. A reminder that as things stand Turkey would be knocked out if the Czechs somehow find a winner. Hold onto your hats folks.

Every time the ball goes into the Turkey box at the moment the Czechs look very dangerous.

09:25 PM BST

GOAL – Czech Republic are level

Soucek with the goal!

VAR will check this but it looks fine to me. The ball into the area is headed on and Soucek goes for the ball along with the Gunok. The Turkey goalkeeper spills it and Soucek smashes the ball into the net.

Game. On.

09:25 PM BST

65 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

Turkey should be two up. Yilmaz again is the creator with some excellent work down the right. His cross finds Giuler unmarked in the area but he gets his shot all wrong and the Czechs survive.

09:24 PM BST

64 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

Excellent cross into the Turkey box where Chory is lurking at the back post. His header is back across goal and is only just dealt with by a nervy-looking Gunok

09:22 PM BST

62 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

You have to feel a bit for the Czechs after that dubious red card but you’d have to say they have created little in the final third. Maybe harsh as they have 10 men but they knew they had to win this game but have shown  nothing going forward.

09:18 PM BST

59 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

More ball now for the Czechs as they search for an equaliser. That, inevitably, is going to leave space in behind for Turkey to exploit.

09:16 PM BST

56 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

The Czechs ring the changes with Chory, Kovar and Kuchta all coming on. They need what is nearly a miracle now if they are to get back into this one let alone qualify for the last-16.

09:14 PM BST

53 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 1

It’s raingin for the Czechs but now it looks to be pouring. Stanek is having to go off after makign that superb save.

09:10 PM BST

GOAL – Turkey lead

Calhanoglu breaks the deadlock!

It all comes from Yilmaz, who does brilliantly down the right. His cut-back ball into the area finds Yilmaz, whose shot is brilliantly saved by Stanek. However, the ball falls to Calhanoglu who lashes a shot with the outside of his boot into the far corner.

09:09 PM BST

49 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Early signs are that this half is going to set up in the same vein as the first finished. The Czechs are deep in the low block shape while wave after wave of Turkey attack comes at them.

The counter is on though as Yuksek is booked for bringing down a Czech break.

09:06 PM BST

46 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Turkey go close. Yilmaz makes a good run to the back post and heads back across goal. The ball squeezes under Stanek and dribbles acorss the mouth of the goal but there is not another Turkey player in sight.

09:05 PM BST

Here come the teams

A quick update on where we stand. With Georgia leading, Turkey would go through as things stand. However, if the Czechs were to win and the other game remains the same, Turkey would be out.

We are back underway.

08:55 PM BST

Stat to forget...if you’re Czech

Antonín Barak’s dismissal in the 20th minute was the earliest sending off by a player to start a match at the European Championships in the competition’s history

08:49 PM BST

HALF TIME: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Guler makes space for a shot on his right foot but it’s a horrible slice and that is the final action of what has been a fairly turgid first 45 minutes.

08:46 PM BST

45 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Jurasek has a superb chance to open the scoring. It comes from Provod, who breaks fast after a loose pass inside the Czech half from Turkey. He feeds Jurasek on the left but his touch takes him wide and makes the save all that much easier for Gunok.

08:44 PM BST

43 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Calhanoglu wriggles free inside the area and forces a superb piece of defensive work from Soucek. Even with 10 the Czechs are making this tough for Turkey. You have to credit theri shape even if it isn’t especially good at generating exciting attacking play.

Indeed that is kind of the point.

08:41 PM BST

40 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

In other news, Patrik Schick would miss the last-16 match if the Czechs get there after that yellow card he received while not even playing. Not a smart move.

08:40 PM BST

38 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Coufal is rolling around on the floor after going up for a header with Yildiz. Fairly sure he’s looking for a second booking for the Turkey winger there. The referee is wise to his motives it seems.

08:38 PM BST

36 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Yildiz has got Coufal on toast on the right flank. Turning the Czech right back in and out as he dances down the byline. Yildiz is then booked at the end of the move for a slightly clumsy tackle on Hranac...again never a yellow card. This referee has a touch of happy feet with his cards at present.

08:36 PM BST

33 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Crunching tackle from Yuksek on Provod. The Czech player stays down but there’s nothing wrong with the challenge. The referee books Patrik Schick on the bench for remonstrating with the fourth official.

08:33 PM BST

30 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Good defensive work from the Czechs in the low block. Stout work from Krejci at the back, who then feeds Chytil. His turn is quick and forces Turkey into a cheap foul. That is the route out for the Czechs once they look to launch those counters.

08:30 PM BST

29 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Yilmaz gets a shot off and forces Stanek into a comfortable save but it’s all Turkey at present as the Czechs sit back in their shape.

08:28 PM BST

26 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Beautiful work from Yildiz, who cuts back hard on his right, sending Coufal flying. He manages to get the ball onto his right foot and it’s only a flying foot from the Czechs that stops a shot on target.

08:26 PM BST

24 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Well that’s put the cat among the pigeons. The Czechs will surely revert to the system they deployed against Portugal now. Deep, rigid and hoping to catch Turkey on the break.

08:21 PM BST

RED CARD – Czech Republic

Antonin Barak is off for a second yellow! Looks harsh and I’m not sure the first one was yellow either. Both are pretty soft. Yes, the freeze frame will show his foot on top of a boot but that’s tough.

08:21 PM BST

19 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

The press of the Czechs is causing Turkey some problems. For their lack of attacking innovation, they are a very organised team off the ball and are, at present, not allowing this fluid Turkey team to build from the back.

08:19 PM BST

17 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Coufal lines up another log throw and again it causes Turkey problems. It’s Soucek who gets the flick on and defender Holes has an open header. There’s not much pace on the ball though and perhaps it’s that need to generate some velocity on the header that leads to him nodding over.

08:15 PM BST

13 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Guler turns away from defenders in the centre circle and has acres of space to drive into. He has options left and right but opts to unleash a shot from all of 25 yards. High and wide...his team-mates aren’t impressed but after the goal he scored against Georgia you can hardly blame him for having a go.

08:13 PM BST

11 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Barak picks up an early yellow card for a fairly innocuous foul on Kadioglu. Bit harsh for me that.

08:11 PM BST

9 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Yilmaz makes the run in behind and gets to the ball first after a neat chipped ball. Robin Hranac is there to make a nuisance of himself though in a first skirmish of one of the key battles of the evening.

08:09 PM BST

7 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Kenan Yildiz is another player to watch for Turkey. He drives into the Czech box off the left and cuts back on his right foot before shooting goalwards. Jindrich Stanek is there to mop up the danger but this has been a good response form Turkey after a quick start from the Czechs.

08:07 PM BST

4 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Good build-up from Turkey with Arda Guler at the heart of it. Probing and prodding on the edge of the Czech 18-yard box. He already looks dangerous.

08:04 PM BST

2 mins: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

A dangerous start continues for the Czechs as Lukas Provod cuts in off the left and lashes a shot goalwards. Mert Gunok parries clear and it’s a corner for the Czechs.

08:03 PM BST

1 min: Czech Republic 0 Turkey 0

Early doors and the Czechs already set out their stall. A throw in on the right is launched into the mixer in the direction of Tomas Soucek. There is momentary panic in the Turkey defensive ranks but they do clear.

A different tone of anthem. More considered and perhaps allowing singers a little more time to hit those top notes. Also strong.

One thing is for certain – this match will not lack atmosphere.

Kick-off approaches

Just under 15 minutes until we get underway here. The atmosphere is crackling as we head into one of the two final group matches of Euro 2024.

07:31 PM BST

What’s needed for each team

Turkey sit on three points and are therefore in by far the strongest position of the sides in Group F, Portugal aside.

While a 3-0 loss to Portugal has not been helpful for their goal difference, Vincenzo Montella’s side know that either a win or a draw will be enough to see them through.

In fact, Turkey can still draw and finish second in the group if Georgia fails to beat Portugal.

For Czechia, it’s a ‘win and you’re in’ situation. Anything less will see them eliminated, so in truth the equation is as simple as it can be.

Key absentee

Patrik Schick missing out tonight is a big miss for the Czech Republic, especially in light of their inability to generate a huge amount of chances in this tournament thus far.

Without a sharpshooter like that at the business end, Mojmir Chytil of Slavia Prague comes in. In truth though, with Schick absent you’d think the Czechs will lean even more into their defence-first mentality (well-organised if you;re feeling kind).

Not to be outdone...

06:56 PM BST

The scenes...

06:55 PM BST

A big one in Hamburg

We are into the death throes of the group stage at Euro 2024 and thus the final chance for countries to make it into the last-16 has very much arrived.

With Portugal virtually assured to finish top of Group F, both Czechia and Turkey have the chance to ensure progression in Hamburg this evening.

Uefa has decided to make qualification for the last-16 about as confusing as the enigma code so before we get any deeper let’s run through the various permutations.

These two sides are about as divergent stylistically as could be. Turkey are perhaps the most cavalier side in the competition, roaring forward at every opportunity only to leave gaping holes at the back – see both Portugal and Georgia games as evidence.

Here, they face the pragmatist’s pragmatists in Czechia, a side built on rigidity and defensive organisation.

Something, as they say, has to give. Stick with Telegraph Sport this evening to find out what.
