Watchtree Nature Reserve hosted their 2024 10k Race earlier this week for the second year of their successful running series.

The event, which was held on Wednesday 19 June, has grown in popularity, rising from 150 entries in 2023, to selling out at 200 in 2024.

The route started and finished at the reserve, taking in local roads in and around Wiggonby and Aikton. En route water stations were staffed by members of Carlisle Junior Tri-Club, and a huge group of volunteer marshals dotted the route, helping runners on their way with encouragement and support. #TeamWatchtree volunteers and staff were also out in force helping with car parking, race timing, registrations, admin and setting out the course.

For many runners, this was the first time they had ever taken part in a 10K distance event, and for those who began running with the Watchtree Couch to 5K group back in January, it was a particularly special landmark in their training.

The glorious weather certainly helped morale in the runners and boosted the number of supporters in and around the Watchtree Visitors' Centre, who were able to sample the new Three Hills Gelato on sale in their Gelato Shack, as well as increasing business in the cafe.

Watchtree volunteer and race organiser, Morag Thompson said: "We'd like to give our thanks to our fantastic group of volunteer marshals as without them, these events couldn't go ahead, and it is them who give the athletes a great experience. It is great for us to give something back to Watchtree, a place we all love and enjoy".

Steve Balmer, managing director of David Allen Financial Services said: "We are proud to have supported yet another successful event at Watchtree, and it is fantastic to see the number of participants increase on last year. We love to get involved with activities that are enjoyed by the local community and this one has been really popular".

Entries have now opened for the Watchtree Half Marathon on Sunday November 17, 2024. Runners are advised to get their entries in early as the 10K Run was a sell-out. Go to www.watchtree.co.uk/events for more details.
