As West Bromwich Albion fall to yet another damaging defeat, this time against Burnley at home on Saturday, an already terrible season is getting worse with every defeat. In the history of the Premier League, there’s been a lot of poor teams who have had bad seasons, so where does Alan Pardew’s side rank? Here’s why this West Brom team could be the worst team in Premier League history.

When people talk about the worst teams ever to grace the Premier League, they think of the Derby team of 2007/08 who won just 11 points in their whole campaign, or the Aston Villa team of 2015/16 who amassed a total of just 17 points. So how can this Albion side, who have 20 points so far this season, possibly have had a worse season than those two teams?

The Derby and Aston Villa teams I mentioned earlier were really poor in terms of quality, that’s why they struggled so much, they simply did not have the players to be competitive in this league. That’s the difference between those teams and this Baggies team, we do have the quality to compete in this league, but the players level of performances have dropped so dramatically that they find themselves bottom of the league.

This is a team full of international players who have played consistently well for a number of seasons. Looking through the team, Ben Foster is a great goalkeeper and the defensive unit has real quality. The likes of Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans have been linked with moves to bigger clubs, Kieran Gibbs played at the highest level for Arsenal and Ahmed Hegazy, who got to the final of the African Cup of Nations with Egypt.

Jonny Evans has been linked with the likes of Manchester City.

In midfield, Matt Phillips was one of the most creative players in the PL last season with 8 assists (2 this season), Jake Livermore is in the latest England squad, Grzegorz Krychowiak won back-to-back Europa Leagues with Sevilla and Chris Brunt has more PL assists than Eden Hazard.

This squad is more than good enough to stay in the Premier League. It’s almost unthinkable that a team with this quality finds itself at the bottom of the league, with just 1 win in the last 30 games. This team is the most underperforming in Premier League history and in my opinion, have had a worse season than Derby or Aston Villa ever did, when you compare the difference in quality. That is a shocking inditement of just how bad Alan Pardew’s side have performed this season.
