West Ham make Manchester City star Yaya Toure shock transfer target as Slaven Bilic will be backed

West Ham United have no intention of sacking Slaven Bilic at the end of this season and are considering making Yaya Toure one of their major signings in the summer should be leave Manchester City.

A review of the manager’s and the team’s performance will still take place – as is customary at West Ham under the current owners - but, largely, with the intention of identifying transfer targets and making off-the-field improvements.

Toure is soon out of contract at City and is yet to agree a one-year contract extension, with West Ham emerging as a viable destination for the 33-year-old Ivorian. It remains to be seen whether they are prepared to match Toure’s wage demands, should be leave City, but given he would be available as a free agent a deal could be struck. Toure’s future is expected to be decided soon.

West Ham want to make two or three significant signings – and have considered a bid for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge - rather than a larger number of lesser acquisitions as they did last summer in what turned out to be a poor recruitment drive.

Money is available, including the £25 million West Ham received when they sold Dimitri Payet back to Marseille in January. Another priority is agreeing a new contract with Michail Antonio. West Ham accept that he warrants a pay rise but they are unwilling at present to meet his demands, with the midfielder asking to be among the higher earners.

There is a general sense of disappointment with this season, the first in the London Stadium, but also an understanding that Bilic has done well under the trying circumstances and deserves to keep his job.

There has been an element of doubt over Bilic’s future but it is understood, from senior sources, that West Ham firmly want him to stay and have no desire to make a change. Bilic remains hugely popular among the West Ham supporters with last Friday’s win at home to Tottenham Hotspur having secured the club’s Premier League status.

The 48-year-old Croatian would not have been short of offers from clubs around Europe should he have been sacked but although West Ham want him to stay there will be no new contract offer either. Not yet.

Telegraph Sport reported earlier this season that any suggestions of a new deal had been shelved even though Bilic will soon be going into the final 12 months of the three-year contract he signed when he succeeded Sam Allardyce.

Instead, the club still intends to allow the manager to enter the final year and will not offer him an extension until January at the earliest, and only then if West Ham perform better next season. It is understood that Bilic wants to stay and will accept that scenario.

The ultimate yo-yo clubs

The West Ham board will, however, question him on the high number of injuries the squad has been hampered by this season. West Ham have suffered 10 significant injuries which have impacted on results and Bilic will be asked about his training and fitness methods and whether he wants to make any changes to his backroom staff and freshen that up.

Attention has focussed on 69-year-old fitness coach Miljenko Rak but he has worked with Bilic for many years and the manager is unlikely to want to make any changes.

None will be enforced upon him either with West Ham having previously suggested he brings in a specialist defensive coach. Rio Ferdinand’s name has been mentioned. Bilic already employs former defender Julian Dicks as one of his assistants.
