Sam Allardyce admits his Everton future is uncertain after he is mocked throughout West Ham

Sam Allardyce has admitted he cannot be confident over his Everton future because “there is no smoke without fire” as he prepares for talks over his position.

Allardyce, who was subjected to more abusive chants from the Everton supporters during this defeat to his former club West Ham United, is facing a defining week with Wayne Rooney’s future also set to be resolved.

DC United have made an offer to sign Rooney, who missed a potential final-day farewell in front of the travelling Toffees fans with a knee injury, and Allardyce expects the 32-year-old’s future to be settled by the end of the coming week.

Two goals from Manuel Lanzini and a Marko Arnautovic strike were enough to sink Everton, despite Oumar Niasse getting on the scoresheet, and Allardyce was once again the target of the club’s own supporters.

It took just four minutes for sections of the away section to sing “f--- off Sam Allardyce”, followed by “you’re getting sacked in the morning” and there were even louder renditions after Cenk Tosun was substituted, much to his annoyance, two minutes before Arnautovic netted West Ham’s second goal.

The Hammers supporters, who themselves got fed up with just about everything associated with the ‘Big Sam’ brand, found the whole thing hilarious and at various points gleefully teased the Everton supporters with chants of “you’ve got Sam Allardyce.”

Despite an eighth place finish, Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri will be well aware that he faces a huge backlash if he does not make another change this summer.

Allardyce first responded to a question on his future by reiterating the fact he still has a contract for next season, but when asked if he was confident that it would be respected, he added: “Well, confident? I can’t quite say confident after all the rumours I’m reading because, generally, there is no smoke without fire is there? But we will wait and see when we meet up this week.”

Everton have been linked with both Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca and Marco Silva, who worked for Hull City and Watford, and Moshiri has so far remained silent on his plans.

Whatever Moshiri decides over the managerial situation could impact on Rooney’s decision on whether to stay at Everton or move to Major League Soccer in America.

“It’s up to Wayne and his representatives and the board of directors, and what they do, which is where it is at the moment and everybody will know by the end of the week,” said Allardyce.

“Just to stop people talking and writing nonsense, there is no problem between me and Wayne Rooney. We’ve been very professional and very adult with our conversations, so all your writing… or you’ve been misled by somebody, or you have just decided to make it up yourself I’m afraid. Thank you.”

With that Allardyce got up and walked out of his press conference, and it may not be too long before he is heading for the Everton exit as well. The majority of supporters certainly hope so.
