Wheelchair tennis ace Green ready for Wagner test

Wheelchair tennis ace Richard Green is ready to take on tennis legend David Wagner after the biggest win of his career at the LTA’s British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

Coggeshall’s Green, 30, was a significant underdog in his opening round match against Bryan Barten, who is currently ranked tenth in the quad wheelchair singles rankings.

However it was a clinical and composed performance from Green, who beat the American 6-4 6-4 to reach the last eight in Nottingham.

“It went pretty good. I think I played well on the whole. I think it is my first top ten win,” said the Brit.

Green faces another American next in the form of Wagner, one of the all-time greats of wheelchair tennis.

Wagner, 48, has won a staggering 28 Grand Slam titles - six in singles and 22 in doubles - and was the doubles runner-up alongside Britain’s Andy Lapthorne at Wimbledon last Sunday.

It will be a stern test for Green, but he fully believes he is up for the challenge.

He added: “It will be a bit more tricky than today, but it’s doable. It’s definitely doable.”
