West Brom Fan View: Rondon deserves praise not criticism

I know a fair few West Brom fans who were shocked by the decision to drop Salomon Rondon to the bench for the game at Everton, but there are some who have been critical of the Venezuelan in recent weeks, which I believe to be extremely unfair. Here’s why.

The 27-year-old has now gone 13 games without a goal, but put yourself in Rondon’s shoes, constantly running and chasing, relying on scraps and hopeful crosses into the area for scoring chances. Being a striker in this team is not an easy task.

I will admit that he was disappointing in the defeat against Crystal Palace last week, but lets face it, the whole team underperformed.

The facts don’t lie though, Rondon is still our top Premier League goalscorer with seven goals, and has more than Kevin De Bruyne, Paul Pogba and the same as Chelsea’s Pedro.

Also, if you consider how many key passes are made per game in the Premier League, West Brom are 17th in the Premier League with a total of 203, that’s just seven per game. That’s less than Hull City, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Watford.

This all means that Salomon Rondon averages just 2.3 shots per game in the Premier League, in comparison, Zlatan Ibrahimovic manages 4.4 per game.

Furthermore, In terms of big chances missed, Rondon has missed just five big chances this season, Lukaku, Benteke and Aguero have all missed eight, Ibrahimovic has missed 17!

To sum up, Rondon is playing in a team that creates few chances, this means he has fewer shots and therefore fewer chances to score, all while being asked to run around like a headless chicken with hardly any support.

The truth is, Rondon is sacrificing his game massively to do a job for the team. In a team with a style that create more chances I believe that he would be a good goalscorer, but West Brom are not that team.

Cut the guy some slack, he gives everything for this club, I’m sure he’ll start scoring again soon.

Boing boing!
