Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Emma Raducanu vs Alison Van Uytvanck latest score, updates from Centre Court

Wimbledon 2022- LIVE!

This wasn’t vintage Emma Raducanu for her first time gracing Centre Court but, in the end, it didn’t quite need to be.

Her rhythm was lacking – unsurprising having not played for nearly three weeks – and her unforced error count was too high at 18. Plus, she only converted four of 12 break-point chances, two of which came courtesy of double faults from her opponent.

But crucially she mustered all the necessary grit and determination to edge out Alison van Uytvanck. And positively there seemed little sign of the side strain which has kept her off court since the Nottingham Open earlier this month.

There have been infinitely more memorable matches in Raducanu’s brief career to date but the 19-year-old won’t be unduly concerned having beaten a dangerous first-round opponent 6-4, 6-4 to seal her spot in the second round.

Here’s how it all happened on Centre Court!

Raducanu plays down injury concerns

15:32 , Matt Verri

Raducanu she is fit and raring to go ahead of getting her Wimbledon campaign underway.

The British number one has had a frustrating grass-court season up to this point, managing just seven games of tennis since the French Open. After withdrawing from her opening match in Nottingham, Raducanu has been battling a side strain and was not ready to compete at Eastbourne.

Her Wimbledon participation had been put in doubt as a result, but the 19-year-old has eased those concerns.

“I think that this week was a good buildup,” Raducanu said.

“Definitely there were moments earlier on in the week we weren’t really sure. We were sort of going to see how the week goes. But it went pretty well.”

Been quite the year!

15:16 , Matt Verri

A year ago, Emma Raducanu was a wide-eyed teenager star struck by the game’s biggest stars, writes Matt Majendie.

One of her notable highlights from Wimbledon 12 months ago was a simple hello from the then-world No1 Novak Djokovic.

Back then, Raducanu was an unknown, fresh from having taken her A-levels and unable to play many tournaments in tennis’ lower tier because of the ongoing impact of Covid.

This time, the 19-year-old should not be short of greetings from Djokovic or the rest of the world’s leading players for that matter. But inside she said felt no less enamoured by the enormity of the occasion nor the star status of those around her this time.

Next up on Centre Court

15:05 , Matt Verri

Raducanu will follow Novak Djokovic on Centre this afternoon, though she’ll have to wait a bit longer than expected.

The defending champion has lost the second set against Kwon Soon-woo, with it currently 6-3 3-6 1-1.

There is no action currently on the outside courts, as the rain pours down at Wimbledon.

Around the courts

14:38 , Alex Young

A few first-round results are in.

No3 seed Ona Jabeur made easy work of Mirjam Bjorklund, winning 6-1, 6-3 as no28 seed Alison Riske beat Ylena In-Albon 6-2, 6-4.

No29 seed Anhelina Kalinina had it slightly trickier against Anna Bondar, coming from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

British top Jodie Burrage went down 6-2 6-3 to Lesia Tsurenko and Maja Chwalinska run out a 6-0 7-5 winner over Katerina Siniakova.

Prediction

14:13 , Alex Young

Familiar fitness concerns over Raducanu still linger ominously and will not dissipate until she puts together a decent run of form.

This is her first time on Centre Court at Wimbledon and the pressure will be intense as she seeks to live up to her British No1 billing and reigning US Open champion status despite constant injury setbacks and scrutiny.

The road ahead is notably difficult and Van Uytvanck, the world No46, presents a tricky opening assignment. However, we’re backing Raducanu to feed off that fervent home support and get her campaign off to an impressive start.
